I won't see what you mean with WaveLab 6 and Windows 7 Desktop Composition, what problem?
WaveLab 7 does use Windows 7 Desktop Composition like (optionally) semi-transparent windows.

PG,
I will try to explain this as best I can - when I ran Wavelab 6.11 in Vista Business (32/64) and now in Windows 7 64 Bit - with the standard Aero theme enabled - when I have a file open (wave form) and attempt to use CTRL-Drag to zoom in on a section of the file - at the instant the rectangular "zoom area" is drawn on screen - instead of a smooth "instant" zoom (as we get with Windows XP)...I get a noticeable "flashing" rectangle and sort of a "stutter" step zoom that is choppy, annoying and slow.
To combat this - I must right click on the Wavelab program icon and under Compatibility - check "Disable Desktop Composition"...and restart. WL then fires up using the Windows Basic Theme (instead of Aero) and the zoom issue is resolved.
I first thought it may be the video card - but I have tried three different cards and all of them exhibit the same choppy zoom. I really like the Aero theme and none of my other program exhibit any issues. I am hoping that this has been rectified in WL7...
Maybe I will screencap this behavior and post a little clip so you can see what's happening.

I see. No such problem with 7.
Concerning icons, 95% of icons have renewed (~700 in all) and so far were appreciated by testers. Now I'm sure this can't please everyone. Also, it was choosen to have a UI style close to the platform style, and that means Windows 7 on one hand and Snow Leopard in another.

As always - I appreciate the detail PG. Icons - as is the case with many UI elements - are very subjective. I am sure I will be fine with the final shipping product.

It does specifically say Windows XP SP3 tho.....not that anyone would still be on SP2 now anyway...

Beware the Ides of September (we're six months out of phase here below the equator!).
Sounds like PG ships the golden master end August, enjoys a holiday after the American tourists have left, and comes back to support the rollout after the month or so it takes for Steinberg organise the logistics of the release.

Having WXP SP2 instead of SP3 is "living on the edge"? How so? --- If I install SP3, what improvement will I get?
Not that I'm against doing it - more a matter of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
So are my WXP-SP2 PCs "broke" and in need of "fixing"? |

A quick Google search indicates that SP3 gives several security fixes AND overall improved performance. As well as I remember (it's been a long time ago), the consensus here among Cubase users was very positive. Typically I take the side of "if it ain't broke" but in this case I think you're missing out.

Yes. Since SP2 was certified in 2004.
Lots has happened in 6 years (an eternity in computer time)...plus support ended on SP2 a long while back - not only from Microsoft but from everybody. The performance update alone on SP3 is definitely worth it....however - most importantly - while I am not certain what SP3 does for WL7 - you may find yourself unable to install it if you remain on SP2.

OK, thanks for that.
I don't suppose the security improvements count for much on PCs that aren't connected to the internet, but if SP3 gives a genuine performance improvement that I would notice in Cubase (for MIDI-only projects) then I suppose I ought to go for it.
And, as you say, assuming I want the WL7 upgrade, I'll have to, anyway. |
