I'm upgrading my computer, now 5 years old. Some of the latest VSTi's and synths don't work in Cubase VST 5.X, so I've bought Cubase 5, the latest.

I've not set up the new computer yet, and Cubase 5 is still in the post to me, so maybe I'm asking about something I may not have a problem with. However, I need to know...

In Cubase 5, is it possible to load old Cubase VST 5.x songs if I want to rework any of them, or even finish ones that I had started on?

Also, can I install dear old Cubase VST 5.x and Cubase 5 on the same machine, and will they both work? (I assume they would share the Vstplugins folder...??). Which of the two should I install first?

All help appreciated. Thanks,

John.

Hi John,
You can't import VST 5 projects into Cubase 5 (or Cubase 4). But Steinberg have a download of SX3 that will import VST projects, although its less than perfect. Then you have to import the SX3 projects into Cubase 5. See this thread http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=99835 for an explanation. Your C5 dongle lets you use all earlier versions of Cubase - I went from SL2 to C4, and the C4 dongle lets me use SL2 to import VST5 projects.

You can run VST5 and Cubase 5 on the same machine. Its best to install VST5 first, so all the ASIO drivers, etc, get overwritten with the newest versions. If you are going to use SX3 to import the VST5 stuff, its probably best to install that after VST5, but before Cubase 5, for the same reason.

Both C5 and VST5 use the same VSTplugins folder for add-on VSTs, but if you import a VST5 project, you may find that some of the VSTs seem to be missing. If you look in Program Files\Steinberg\VST ...\VSTplugins (where the folder name 'VST ...' depends on the version of VST5 you install e.g. 'VST32 5.1') you'll find the missing ones, and you need to move them to Program Files\Steinberg\VSTplugins.

Good luck!

PS When you start VST5 it will give you lots of messages about various Cubase 5 VSTs not working with VST5 - just ignore them.

Great question JohnatSongLand because I am going thru those pains myself right now so your question is really timely for me. It was also very interesting to me by going back in time to Cubase VST 5 how the program has evolved from VST5 thru to the SX series (SX3) and then on to Cubase 5.

My other problem in VST5 is to get audio playback recorded. But, being a Mac guy just can't take the time to read the manual(s) ( in the days they provided printed manuals ).

Also thanks to you Wes, I sure am very grateful you are will to help us and providing the details as to how.

I know nothing about MACs but it sounds like you are sending your MIDI to a hardware/software synth. Try using the USM VSTi instead, and you'll get around this problem.

Problem solved:

I forgot that i was working in OS 9 and that you have to set up sound in and out in the Apple Control's Sound.

Sorry for my silly posting/question.
