I have a $500.00 voucher for UAD2 Plugins. I currently have only what came with the UAD2 Solo. Looking for recommendations on how to spend this voucher. Interested in what will best serve to polish vocals and insturmentation working with what is provided by Cubase 5. Mixer is a Presonus StudioLive which is supposed to have decent mic pre's. My best mic is a Rode NT2A. Will be using VST drums and bass too. Music styles will be moderate rock, southern rock, blues, contemperary country.

I do not expect to add to these choices anytime soon. What are the must haves?

Thanks, Dawg

Honestly since that the voucher is not to expire, take the time to demo them until that maybe you will be floored by some of them.
UAd has promotion every month, you should be able to grab any of them at one time or another getting rabate of 20% and +.
IMHO, it is easy to buy something good which we don't really need or can be easy to reasonably mimic using the stock or native ones, we have to grab first those which are bread & butter.
Here, I can't live without the 33609, LA-2A and 1073. Plus many more in variable degree of course...

I have been on their site all morning. The LA-2A is on the list. I will look more closely at the 1073 and 33609.

Any experience with the EMT 250, and the Roland RE-201?

I already demoed and these are excellent and on my list. In my own setup the Plate 140 fill well my Lexicon stuff + Princeton 2016 & TC.
For delay, Lexicon, EH outboard, UAD's included DM-1 & DM-1L and even C4 stock fill well my needs, so I'm not in hurry for anything around RE-201, EchoPlex or Cooper Time. YMMV of course.

The LA-2A is one of those compressors that is life changing, in terms of how you mix.
It's that good.
The Neve 1073 & the 1081 are both musy have for me, not only because they sound so damned good but there are additionally SE versions too.
I don't much get the 33609 as yet, preferring the FairChild as a buss compressor by a long margin.
LA-2A & Neve 1073 = Instant vocal.

Everywhere I have looked the solo comes with the 1176 and the LA2A and the pultec and a reverb., so you might want to look at the fairchild and the 160 comp and maybe the cambridge eq

Wiz, you are correct. My solo came bundled with a starter set of plugins. I think you are right, but I should confirm what they are before I get to far into this. I appreciate all the good feedback. It has caused me to review several items for the second and third time. I also found a "top ten must have" list on the UAD site that agrees with much of what you guys are saying.

You're perfectly correct!!
Included is the 1176LN & SE, LA2A, Pultec & RealVerb.
Has the CS1 and it's components also been dropped then, or does this also get bundled?
(Sorry for dumb stuff, still on 3 UAD-1 here)

Would definitely recommend the following then, in no particular order.
1 - FairChild 670.
2 - Neve 1073/1073SE
3 - Roland RE-201
4 - LA-3A
5 - Cambridge EQ
6 - Precision EQ & Precision Limiter (if you do any mastering, you need these & probably also...)
7 - Manley Massive Passive (I do not own this, but will buy as soon as I get my Quad.....)

Good choice Neil. I'm just surprise that 33609 still not in your heart! Laughing
If I used for a long time the Fairchild like on drums group, since the 33609 I ended up with the later most of the time , and even for individual drums.
Only turning the recovery between 400-800 or auto you get instant beautifull snare release from very snappy to relax.
It is the first beast that I always keep on my main bus @ 1:1.5, auto recovery and a tad of GR no more than 3 and sometime 1 is just enough to gives his magical shine. After that anything can be stacked. It also gives cool results playing with the mono/stereo since that you can get a get a double knee or even a two-stage release after a transient (manual has good explanations). That gives nice sounding things to explore on drums bus, guitars and even sometime the main one.

I'm going to copy this to a text file, and try this.
I guess my biggest thing with the 33609 is that I am still not on UAD-2 yet (but very, very soon) and as such uses a lot of my available 3 UAD-1 cards,
and I never got around to learning how to get the best from it.

Thanks for the pointer....

If you want to use the UAD in mixing.

You should pick plugs that can be run on many instances on the Solo, then expand and buy eg a duo and buy some
'heavier' plugs.

If you will use it for mastering, then I should go for the Massive Passive. Smile
