Just got a shiny new MR 816 and am trying to get something happening with it.

I installed MR TOOLS 1.6, cabled the unit to my Dell XPS 420, and have gotten NO INDICATION that either end sees the other. Absolutely nothing happens, ever.

When I turn on the MR 816, the front panel led's flash around for a few seconds and then stop. NEVER do I see the WORD CLOCK/SAMPLE RATE led's flash when I connect the firewire to my PC. It's as though I never even connect the MR816 to the computer.

Where to go from here? I've done some research and ordered a SIIG PCI 32-bit firewire card, since I don't really expect the on-board Dell firewire interface to work, especially since I just upgraded the machine to Windows 7. What else can I try in the meantime?

In particular - HOW CAN I DO THE MR816 FACTORY RESET? I want to try that, to see if I can get any kind of clue as to whether my MR816 is really working.

I have a LOOONG way to go, please toss me a bone if you can folks...

Has the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver loaded ok? It usually places an icon on the taskbar tray (bottom right) or you can see it in the device manager. This sets the clock etc
Also is the firewire driver running ok - check in device manager in control panel
Win 7 should show the MR816 within the sound video and game controllers section of the device manager

factory reset is on page 23 of the getting started manual (see Steinberg.net) as below (this has helped some people on the forum)

Restoring the Factory-programmed Settings (Factory
Set)
You can reset all the settings of the MR816 CSX/
MR816 X to the initial factory-programmed one by turning
the power on (pressing the [STANDBY/ON] switch
to the ON position) while holding the multi function
encoder knob and [PAD] button. While the operation is
being performed, all the lamps of the MR816 CSX/
MR816 X will flash. When the flashing stops, the operation
is completed and the MR816 CSX/MR816 X starts
normally with the factory settings.
CAUTION
• Never attempt to turn off the power while factory settings
are being written to internal memory.
Turning the power off in this state results in loss of all
user data and may cause the system to freeze (due to
corruption of data in the internal memory). This means
that MR816 CSX/MR816 X may not be able to operate
properly, even when turning the power on next time.

Yes and yes. Device manager says that there is a TI 1394 ohci firewire driver and that it is working. Under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" there are 3 entries, as shown in the manual.

The Yamaberg software is there, but it (the software) doesn't detect anything. It's as if nothing is connected, or as if I had never powered on the unit. On the other end (MR816) the situation is the same.. some power-on blinky-blinky and then it sits there, never does the WORD CLOCK/SAMPLE RATE led flash sequence occur, as described in the manual.

I just tried changing the 1394 driver to other options ("Legacy" and "Texas Instruments") in the Device Manager. This had no effect. Still no boom.

First, I'd try another firewire cable. Then, I'd try to install on another computer and see if its recognized there. If so, its something in the system. If not, you may have a bad 816.

did the factory reset do anything?
I guess the best sequence is:
1) disconnect the MR and do a factory reset
2) remove all the drivers
3) reboot computer
4) re install drivers
5) connect the reset MR

I have had one faulty firewire cable in the past. It surprised me as it looked realy well made.

DEFINITELY NOT.

But I now have an amazing collection of firewire cards, cables, hard drives and doodads. INCLUDING the holy grail Belkin F5U504 w/TI chipset. And everything is working.. except the MR816CSX..

Which is still doing exactly what it did when it first came out of the box. Only now I can get it to do nothing with 4 different firewire cards, countless different drivers, and 3 cables Razz

NO CHANGE.. thanks for asking!

Oh, and I forgot to mention: I have tried all of these cards, cables and drivers on BOTH Windows 7 Ulitmate AND Vista.

I am using MR tools v1.6, by the way. Sad

Thanks for listening..

Last thing I can think of: try loading up on another computer. Do you have access to one?

Yes, that's what I was going to try next. My dad has a recent Intel iMac and he's going to let me do an experiment with that.

I predict that it will work perfectly. I now believe that my mobo/chipset is incompatible with Yamaberg MR816 driver software. I'll keep you posted.

Please do keep us posted. I'm thinking of getting a new power PC and worried now that the MOBO might not be compatible with my 816. How would I know?

I plugged it in to two different computers, one my work computer with Windows XP 32 bit and it worked (although the system isn't powerful enough to record with) and my very high powered Dell Studio XPS I7 with Windows 7 64 Bit - which it didn't work - although it had before.

Reinstalling the drivers seemed to allow it to work again. I'm using the onboard 4 pin IEEE port and it seems to work fine.

Plugging it noto the express card with the 6 pin fire wire card seems to be more intermittant. Tech support suggests disabling virus protection but I just can't bring myself to do it. I wil probably try that soon - but it does scare me.

When this thing works, it's great and the sound is very impressive; clean & rich with great depth, - but wow what a pain in the ass.
