Well, my 2112th post just has to be Rush related! I managed to get a block A3 ticket for London O2 in May next year. I've seen them countless times over the last ... 30 years ( Shocked ) but this will be the closest I've been to the stage. This will be another full evening of Rush with no support band, and they are playing Moving Pictures in its entirety! Cool

I think I'm looking forward to it just a little bit! And it all comes just a couple of weeks after seeing Roger Waters performing The Wall. Ahh, what a month May 2011 is going to be!

And as I won't be around over the holiday season I would like to wish all my friends and acquaintances here happy days and music-making jolliness over the festive period. May the muse take you wherever it will! Cool

I'm *quiz* because I'm so broke right now that I can't afford anything, much less tickets to a show. And I would dearly love to see Rush again because I know "any day now" they're gonna say they are retired.

"The Dukes" (Fagan, McDonald, and Boz Scaggs) are playing tonight in Manhattan a la "The Rock n Soul Revue," and that's another show I would die to see.

Rush are OK - terrific musicians and all * a bit self-indulgent at times, like many prog rockers* but living in Canada and with Canadian broadcast regulations stating all radio stations and TV stations broadcasting music have to give Canadian artists 33.3% of the airtime by law, they get played about 2 dozen times per day and you can get tired of them very fast. Made worse by them picking the same 3 songs over again. Rush have made a gazillion albums and they play only 3 or 4 tracks. - Geddy's voice in particular grates on me. Some of my favourite rock radio therefore play Rush to death to comply with the law- worse than this though, they play Bryan Adams to death too ... even the Guess Who whom I still like, are getting tedious as it's pretty much these 3 artists who are the 'canadian content' on these rock programmes.

+1

I sat behind Geddy at a baseball game in Toronto and chatted with him during the 7th inning stretch. Nice chap.

But I agree about the airplay. Glad to see however that the rest of the world is enjoying yet another great Canadian export.

Speaking of great Canadian exports, there is an episode of Trailer Park Boys with Alex Lifeson, Rush fans will enjoy that for sure! Bubbles can play pretty well.

Oh yeh, if you decide to watch any of the youtube clips, have the kiddies leave the room first. Not good for little ears. Embarassed

I kinda' liked and saw RUSH live in the late 70's ...I was amazed how just 3 guys could fill up the sound stage so well...I kept looking around to see if there was any other musicians hiding in the backround. Another band from Canada called "FM" opened up for them in Oakland California...FM was a complete knock-off/replica of Rush...but again all great players!

Today, even though I still think they're great players...I couldn't/still can't get beyond Geddy Lee's screetching voice...if that isn't enough, I'm just tired of self indulgent musician's jerking their musical wads in my face....though there's some exceptions where I actually 'want' musical wads all over my face Laughing .... "Closer To The Heart" is still a very pretty and listenable tune for me Cool

I remember chatting with geddy at their very 1st show at duffys tavern in hamilton around 1972 I recall. they were still doing alot of copy tunes and the original drummer just couldn't keep up when they got into jams. shortly after they introduced fly by night and it hit the local charts here at no#1. man how things took off. all hilighted with lifeson spot appearance on trailer park boys, lol.
would love to see them 1 more time

Hardly ever any big name bands stopping by in the second city in Sweden. We're living in this vacuum triangle between Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm and there is even some bands making performances in the middle of hillbillyland but never in Gothenburg. Why? The smell of fish? Laughing Nope, no fish left in the sea! Shame on you

Plan B: I'll trick some friends to go to Stockholm! Cool

There were four parts? I thought there were only 3.

Oooooh...yeah, I forgot they threw in a random 4th part on Vapor Trails.

I was never a big Rush fan, although I DO own a couple albums -- Moving Pictures of course and then one from the 90's -- the one that had "Roll the Bones" on it. But a month or so ago I saw "Rush in Rio" concert film from 2003 or so and was BLOWN AWAY. Zap is exactly right about producing a HUGE sound with just three guys -- I kept looking for another guitarist and/or keyboardist in the shadows... Like with many, what kills it for me is Geddy's voice -- at lower registers it's fine, but when he goes up it's plain dreadful. Too bad -- they're all three GREAT musicians that perfectly compliment each other. If Geddy could sing I'd own a lot more of their recordings

I learned to listen past his voice.

Their live setup is similar to mine albeit on a much larger scale. They liberal use samples that they trigger from a number of locations. In fact, they've always demanded the ability to recreate their sound live with just those three. There have been rumors over the years of them searching for a 4th member to play it live instead of using samples but they never did.

Rush in Rio was amazing, and so was their 30th anniversary tour (also on DVD). Nothing compares to actually seeing them live, however.

Beyond the Lighted Stage is a great documentary about the band. The DVD has an extra hour of footage not found on the VH1 special. It's a fun watch, so catch it if you can.

Go read the Wikipedia article on the band to get an idea of their live setup including equipment.
