Working with VSL I want to make a series of expression maps.
In view of the work involved I would like to edit an existing map.
The maps are XML files, but do not quite understand the build up of the files (I cannot connect the expression map as it shows in C5 with the way it is set up in the XML file).
Would anyone know what the set up/structure of the XML files for expression maps is ?

I don't understand what is preventing you from editing the Expression map from the built-in Expression Map Setup window? _________________ Cubase 5.1.1 | Cubase 4.5.2 | SX3.1.1 | Mac OSX 10.6.4 and 10.5.8 | Mac Quad-Core 2.66gHz | 6GB RAM | MOTU PCI-424/2408mk3 | MOTU MidiTimepice AV |

Nothing prevents me from doing that but the amount of time filled with boring scrolling and changing individually through all the expressions.
I prever working with say excell or matlab, which also reduces spelling errors, and keeps me focussed on the structure where possible.
Have you tried editting expression maps with xml editting ?

No, never. Never felt the need to do so.
The only time I've ever edited a Cubase xml file directly, is to remove a plugin from the Blacklist. _________________ Cubase 5.1.1 | Cubase 4.5.2 | SX3.1.1 | Mac OSX 10.6.4 and 10.5.8 | Mac Quad-Core 2.66gHz | 6GB RAM | MOTU PCI-424/2408mk3 | MOTU MidiTimepice AV |

You could try changing specific aspects of the map using the built-in setup window, then observe what happens in the xml file. This technique might give you a better handle on how it tanslates?

Editing XMLs directly is a full equivalent of doing hex-edits in the old times.

It is easy to change values in xml files (not comparable to hex edits, you can very simple lookup queries and change value), and I can find out how, but it might well be that Steinberg or someone else here can give a hand.
I will let know if I make progress.

I did not mean "techically", for it is of course a completely different abstraction layer to edit xml-files compared to Hex-edits.
What I wanted to say is that the xml-files are imho something that should exisit "hidden" for users and the ediotirs should work properly to be able to do changes without touching the xml.
Having said that I must confess that I am heavily editing xml around cubase (for example with the generic remote...).

VSL provides expression maps for their libraries. Have you tried them? _________________ Cubase 5.5.2, Halion 3.5, W7/32, i5 750, 4Gb |

Yes, I'm looking for ways to edit the VSL maps more easily than through the Cubase expression map edit facility

Using the built in editor is like trying to empty the ocean with a dixie cup. It works, but it will take awhile. A good XML Editor exposes the data in a meaningful way and allows bulk editing which makes editing super simple. I mostly use XMLSpy. I'd rather poke my eyes out than use the horrid editors Cubase provides for several of its XML configurators.
EDIT: What it gets down to, is that making onsey twosey type changes is fine through the Cubase interface. If you want to build out an entire map, it's not very efficient. _________________ Lynx Auror 8 | 2x UAD-1 | W7 x64 | C4-WL6 |

Yes, thanks for the illustration, now I'll try to find a freeware xmlspy-like program

The key to the editor is this ...
1) load the xml document into the editor.
2) Extract the schema from the loaded document (save schema)
3) Figure out the label hierarchy you want to populate
4) make a spreadsheet where you have label each level and fill in the data
5) export the data from the spreadsheet to a csv file
6) use the editor to apply the schema to the csv file, which should give you the xml you need to place back in the cubase xml file.
Like most editors, they all do these kinds of things differently, better/worse, easier/harder etc.. Good luck
If you're going to edit 5 things, I'd do it in Cubase. If you're going to add 100 things, I'd find a good editor. _________________ Lynx Auror 8 | 2x UAD-1 | W7 x64 | C4-WL6 |
