drum step sequenceing question

i have got to grips with the main principles of cubase and need help on one more thing,

i would rather step sequence my drums rather them playing them through a midi keyboard,

can you tell me how to do this?

i open a midi track assign the VST instrument (lm-7 for example)

now what do i do, i can set the output to lm-7 and inpu to midi keyboard if i want to use the keyboard to program them, but is there a way to set it up without needing to record real time through the keyboard? (i see the drum editor and key editor etc. in the midi menu but they are greyed out until i actually record soemthign on the midi track,

apart from that i must say this is an amazing program and im so happy i moved from stand alone machines to pc recording.

On the toolbar there should be a menu option for step input when you Right Click on the toolbar. Tick that to make it visible. If it's already ticked you may have to untick some other items to make it visible if you have a small monitor.

okay thanks ill take a closer look later.

any really good drums sequencer, as i have heard the lm-7 and it doens;t sound good (the compressor anyway, .....do any of the other option under the lm-7 sound good?

can someone explain the steps to step sequencing with a vst drum set please?

eg

open midi track
open lm-7 vst....

i know it starts with that, but exactly how i get to step sequence it before i actually have to record with a midi keyboard is puzzling me

im afraid i haven't even got that far, i cant find this step window you speak of, can you tell me how to get to it straight from opening the program?

Double clicking on the tracklane will create an empty MIDI part. You can then double click this MIDI part to enter the key editor.
If you want to have the drum editor instead, assign the MIDI track to a drummap (there's already a GM drummap provided in Cubase)
in the inspector and it will automatically change into the drum editor.
There you can then enter notes with the pencil tool i.e. or step sequence your beats. Have a look under "The MIDI Editors" in the manual,
it is quite well explained.
