Hey Daniel,
I usually have it in a usb hub. I have also tried to leave it plugged in directly to the computer but its still beach balling either way.
thanks for the suggestion.

Hey quantize,
Yes, you are correct. Should I try removing all midi device "drivers" as well?
best,

hmm well this issue is not definitely midi here, its USB
anythings worth a shot, but i think you are at a stage
where u need to verify wether that dongle is ok or not..
preferably by installing SX on another mac if you can... _________________ ..just like regular chickens!

Hey quantize,
I guess I could install it on my wife's dual 800 G4. This is actually a great excuse to use her more powerfull computer to do my stuff!
Next, if it is the dongle, then what?
Do you really think all the people on the forum with this same problem could have a bad dongle?
(this is not meant to be sarcastic, I am really asking. In writing it makes it sound like I am bad mouthing you but I am not at all. I really appreciate your help. had to get that out before the forum becomes vicious )
If this holds true Steinberg has got to come up with a better solution to the cheap plastic 3 cent dongle. I do travel a ton with the dongle, maybe it has been damaged. Maybe it ruines it when I go thru the xray machine at the airport 50 times a year? _________________ www.ferrispark.com

If downgrading to an earlier version of Cubase fixes the problem then it's the Cubase app only.

Hey Chris,
That seems logical. I wonder if its both. Maybe when you downgrade Cubase it downgrades the license program as well?, effecting the dongle.

UPDATE: 3-3-2006 8:00PM EST
Upgraded to Tiger 10.4.5 a few weeks ago. Tonight I did this:
Ran MacJanitor and Cocktail .... cleaned ALL caches, ran ALL cron scripts.
Ran Repair Permissions from Disk Utility.
Unplugged Cubase SX Dongle
Ran Cubase_SX_3.1.0.933_Update
Ran Update_CubaseSX_3.1.1.944
Plugged the Dongle back in
Ran Repair Disk Permissions again
Launched SX 3.1.1.944
Opened Cubase project with a few MIDI tracks (HALion and DFHS VSTi's)
Edited a piano MIDI track ... dragging many hundreds of MIDI notes all around in the key editor
No SBOD! No lock-ups! No problems at all! Halleluyah!
I have done similar procedures many times now without success, but the difference tonight was using MacJanitor and cleaning ALL the caches. That has made a big difference ... don't know why ... but it does. I downloaded MacJanitor from www.versiontracker.com. It is a freeware application .... and I'm also grateful to the author for such fine work.
A Million Thank You's to MikeSX for solving this problem. I am very grateful! _________________ SX 3.1.1.944 & Cubase 5 & 4 & 3 & 2 & 1, HALion, XPhraze, D'Cota, GrooveAgent, Wavelab, etc.

Mr Spork, i just tried to email you the SX crashlog from my Quad but the email came back | Quote: | was not delivered to:
m.spork@steinberg.de
because:
User m.spork (m.spork@steinberg.de) not listed in Domino Directory |
i'm still having quite a few random crashes when moving around things, wether with the mouse or with keycommands.... with the damn QD Module crash message ... this is really starting to do my head in I have had these crashes for the last couple of SX versions for quite a few years now wether on a Cube, 12,15 or 17" Powerbooks and now the Quad. The crashes appear radnomly, but always when i try to move around notes in the keyeditor, or parts in the arange window. When i reopen the same project after a crash and do the same sequence of things the crash doesn't happen again. Although random, the crashes are quite regular and i seem to remember that at least at every session i work in cubase it happens at least once.
The last crash happened when i tried to duplicat/drag a part from a track to a new one i created previously in the arrange window.
The second-to-last crash happened when i tried to move a MIDI note with the mouse in the keyeditor.
the projects i was working on when sx crashed where really light as well, just a couple of MIDI tracks on VSTi's ... could you please shed some light on whats going on there ?
how do i send you the crash log ? it's 450Kb, do you want me to paste it in a PM ?
cheers for any clues or help ... _________________ Some of my tracks on Souncloud

I also tried Prisms suggestions. SX finally behaved properly... for a few days and now it's back. I installed software on my machine since then, and i am guessing that this has something to do with it. This is SO annoying. I really wish Steinberg would release an update to fix this. Now i have to revert to SX2. _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

Some never get this, some get it all the time, and one or two people get it sometimes: For those that crash all the time, what happens if you have nothing running except SX, no audio tracks, and only one MIDI track with a lot of data, and make edits at a relaxed pace? I can get a crash on a G4 450 if I make rapid edits and move the mouse in and out of the MIDI edit window a lot, but I can't get it if I slow down, or do the same on a G5 dual 2.
Could it be something like a stack overflow on a system that can't keep up that is causing this problem? _________________ Dual 2.0G G5 1.5G PCI, SX 3.1, DP 6.01, Logic 8.02, OSX 10.4.11, MOTU 2408, Micro Express, Tranzport, UAD-1 4.9, DA-38 |

I can not see anything special in the logs. Normally it should not crash there.
If no one else is having this sort of problem, I think it must be something specific to your system.
Try to isolate the problem, disabling plugins, etc.

I thought I'd link this here and chime in again as well. It appears I'm not alone here. I still haven't been able to get a handle on what is causing this. It seems simple movements, dragging and locating are to blame. I've had it happen after a long day with a packed project and I've had it right after booting up with an empty project. Makes absolutely no sense. Please, QD Exception. Hi,
I had this same problem and posted about a year ago about it. I tried all suggestions (disconnect everything, take out VST plugins, repair disk permissions e.t.c.), but the only way to solve it is to downgrade back to SX 3.02 which I have been using for about a year now with no problem.
I recently re-installed a whole new system on a clean disk from scratch and since I had to re-install Cubase I thought I'd try and upgrade the freshly installed Cubase to 3.1 to see if the crashing problem would be fixed, but it still crashed with the spinning ball lockup everytime I moved a note in the Key editor.
So I've downgraded back to 3.02 and all is working now. Atleast I can make music without the crashes. The crashing was very frustrating in 3.1. I hope SteinBerg will fix this in the next upgrade. _________________ Cubase SX 3.1

I'm having the same problem on my ibook G4.
Once 3.1.1 is installed, how do you downgrade to 3.02? Are the project file still compatibles with a 3.1.1 cubase sx? |

I seem to remember someone saying that the problem went away if you deactivate the Acoustic Feedback function (the Speaker Icon at the top-left). Not much help if you need to use that function though! Thanks for passing on the speaker icon info. Unfortunately I tried this and this does not stop the system from crashing.
In answer to the previous enquiry from Jacky regarding how to down grade to 3.02. I just deleted the 3.1 Cubase application and then installed version 3.0 from disk, then upgraded to 3.02 from the upgrade which is available as a free download from the Steinberg website.
There were no problems reading the Cubase 3.1 projects within 3.02 (not in my case anyway).
Even though you have to downgrade to fix the problem it's certainly much better being able to create music without worrying about the system crashing in the middle of it. It certainly disrupts the creative flow to say the least. _________________ Cubase SX 3.1

I had this problem again not long after I installed a 10.4.6 security update,I tried all the prevoius cures, repair permissions, run prebinding and clean system caches, but this time they didn't work however, what did work was to replace Cubase SX preferences in the user /library with a backup copy made before the problem started. This suggests to me that there are various causes for this problem and therefore not just one solution. _________________ Mac Pro 2.8 dual Quad core 10g memory Mac OS 10.6.3 ,Cubase 5.1.1

yes, i also still have this on my Quad as well as on the PowerBook and the Cube, all running 10.4.6 ... it's getting silly. not that i expect this problem to vanish just like that without another SX update,... but it would be about time Steinberg aknowledged this problem and once and for all fix this s h i t in a maintenance release or at least in the next version.
i still remember Steinbergs take on it from years ago (yes it's been that long) ... wait for Tiger ... wait for SX 2.x ... wait for SX 3 ... wait for SX 3.1 ... just fix the damn thing _________________ Some of my tracks on Souncloud

well yes I guess there are a number of diff configurations with this one
OSX.3.9. SX 2, old G5 single, editing velocity in key editor, SBOD, crash. 9 of 10 times at least {won't even list the fixes I have tried, some work for awhile, some, nada.}
Same edit same track in drum editor doesn't do it.
"What happens if you have nothing running except SX, no audio tracks, and only one MIDI track with a lot of data, and make edits at a relaxed pace?"
tryiing to work fast, working REAL slow, no diff.
precisely how I have been working: get the MIDI, rhythm tracks, one at at time - that said it does seem to get worse the more I build the thing - and add audio.
happens all the time.
sunday it didn't do it. I don't know why. God. _________________ HPD-15 / Strat to GR33 : MOTU 828mkII, MAudio 4x4, SX2.2.039 [BFD, Darbuka, Guitar Rig2; more NI up to its elbow; VBassist]; G5 1.8 ghz, 2 GB DDR - OSX.4.6 |

Has anyone actually solved the problem by removing the Prefernces folder?
This must be done, of course, while Cubase is not actually running, and in such a way that Cubase cannot find anything to re-import when next launching.. in fact there's no need to actually 'remove' the folder.. just rename it to "Cubase SX 3 Safe" or something similar, and if there is a Cubase SX 2 folder in preferences, then rename it too, so that SX 3 will be forced to build its preferences from scratch. I do know of someone (who actually uses Nuendo 3, which is sometimes also plagued by this same problem!), who solved it by simply removing Defaults.xml from his Nuendo 3 preferences folder. There is absolutely nothing to lose by temporarily removing Defaults.xml from the Cubase SX 3 folder. _________________ Cubase 5.1.1 | Cubase 4.5.2 | SX3.1.1 | Mac OSX 10.6.4 and 10.5.8 | Mac Quad-Core 2.66gHz | 6GB RAM | MOTU PCI-424/2408mk3 | MOTU MidiTimepice AV |
