|
|
Dear all...
If you experience any difficulties applying the 4.1 update or adverse impact on stability, please take the following steps:
Requirement! Windows XP: You need Microsoft Installer 3.1 on your system!
If its not installed (comes via Windows Update if you have automatic updates enabled) please download and install manually. Our patchers rely on this Windows component.
- A clean re-install -
A re-installation does not affect your projects or 3rd party plugins (as long as they are not stored in the Cubase 4 folder).
- Unplug the Steinberg Key
- Un-install Cubase 4 using the Windows Control Panel "Add/Remove Software"
- Delete a potentially left over folder named "Cubase 4" from "\program files\steinberg\..."
- If you have a "Steinberg HALionOne"-folder in the Start menu in Programs use the Uninstaller there to remove HALionOne completely
- Now insert your Cubase 4.0.0 or 4.0.1 installation DVD and install Cubase 4 again
- Now download and install the Cubase 4.1 update and apply it directly afterwards!
- Download and install the recent Syncrosoft LCC and install as well
If you experienced any difficulty applying the the update to 4.1, this should make installing the update plain sailing.
- Part 2 -
If you have other problems when working within Cubase, please take the following steps:
Cubase 4 has a feature to assimilate program settings from previous versions, e.g. from Cubase SX 3, SX 2 or even SX 1. This is designed to aid transition to a new program version, but can in some instances interfere with the updated versions.
If your system still has an older Cubase version installed, we recommend that you make sure Cubase 4 can not assimilate older program settings. In order to do this, please do this:
- Removing preferences -
- Browse to this location by yourself using the path "\Documents & Settings\[login user name]\Application Data\Steinberg\" (hidden folder per default in Windows, you need to make sure you can see hidden folders!)
- You will see different folders for each installed Cubase version as well as for HALionOne
- In order to disable preferences, just rename each folder for a Cubase version, e.g. by adding something like "_backup" to its name (do not delete them though, you may want dedicated files recovered later
- Do this for Cubase 4 as well as for all older installed Versions
- The folder HALionOne can be deleted, it does not contain any really important data
- General tips for removing preferences are here: Removing preferences for Cubase
Now you have:
> A fresh installed Cubase 4.1
> Preferences moved out of the way
Almost ready. Now just:
- Plug in the Steinberg Key again
- Make sure to allow the Windows Hardware Wizard to install the driver automatically (should it pop up)
- Start Cubase 4.
You will be greeted by a virgin Cubase 4 setup. This means that you have to setup some basic options again:
- Select your needed ASIO driver in the menu > Devices > Device Setup... > VST Audiosystem
- Make sure your VST Connections are setup and essential busses are connected to your ASIO hardware
- Define path to additional VST plugin folder(s) if needed to get all your 3rd party plugins in place again
If you are a control freak you probably had a heavy tweaked Cubase 4 installation including Key commands, Windows Layouts etc. If there are really difficult settings to be made again, you can copy the relevant preferences file from the folder you have renamed to the currently active one. For a detailled description and classifaction of all the preferences files, have a look here: Files for the program settings and preferences _________________ Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH

Hi Christian et all,
sorry, but even after doing this sequence step by step, I can't even manage to open Cubase.
C4.1 usually crashed (...has to be stopped...) upon the start up screen.
Having deleted the preferences, upon the first start up it crashed with the Windows crash message just after I clicked the 'already registered' button, when I tried to open it again it crashed with the 'serious error' message, exactly at the same location.
I will try to reinstall my soundcard (E-Mu 1820) drivers now, and if it's still not working I can't think of anything else but going back to 4.0.3...

|
Hi there,
tried EVERYTHING now for more than 6 hours.
I re-installed my soundcard (physically), drivers, Cubase, deleted preferences etc.
During the first start-up after a re-install, C4.1 gets closed by Windows after the registration screen. (Cubase has caused an error and will be stopped...)
If I just try to start again it shows a 'serious error' message, but starts anyway; though with no sound.
Trying to change the ASIO settings then, it freezes and doesn't come back (at least not in the following 30 minutes...).
I went back to 4.0.3 now, and everything is working again.
There seem to be quite some people around with exactly the same problem.
Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing...
Anyway; going to bed now...
Good night! (is there no sleeping Emoticon?!?!)

hey 1st attempt....
sounds like you have a driver crashing it. start up C4.1 with no audio or any usb music device connected. except your steinberg key of course. |

FWIW
I have always copied the C4 installation files off the DVD and onto a HD partition.
I initially needed to do this due to a bad batch of installation 4.0 DVD's that would not complete an install
I have found that placing the updates in the same directory as where I ran the original install, has proven to be the smoothest for me in regards to applying any of the updates.
Worth a shot..

The installation the 1st time seemed OK, same stuff about copying some hsb files from the DVD to the temp dir to complete the install. When I launch cs4.1 it gets to the gui and stays open for 20-30 seconds and then the error message from windows about having to close the app. I followed the instructions on uninstall/reinstall twice. Same result. Any other ideas on what I can try?
Thanks! |

|
|
I was having a crash issue just like jhamman - after examining the Windows error report file (time consuming to say the least) I discovered that among other things it listed the ReWire.dll. I renamed the dll, and started Cubase (Studio 4) and it didn't crash. The only ReWire apps I have installed are ReBirth 2.0 and Fruity Loops 7. I hope something can at least be done about the Fruity Loops ReWire as it is the only one I want to use....Anyway if jhamman or anyone else have the same or similar programs installed this might be causing the crash...(everything worked fine under 4.0.2).
I do hope removing ReWire is only a temporary workaround (ATTN:STEINBERG ) as I only bought Fruity Loops so I could use it Cubase in the first place....
My Computer details:
Windows XP Pro Sp2
AMD 1.6 Ghz Athlon CPU
Creative Audigy 4 Pro soundcard
1.25 GB RAM
EDIT: Fruity Loops seems to be working anyway - I guess it has it's own ReWire file or something. Still, I want these several hours back..... |

Hi userzero,
I think you just saved the guys at Steinberg a lot of research work.
Because browsing through the forum, I had the impression that this is one of the major issues right now - besides the fact that it was the biggest issue for ME, at least...
Having read your post I tried it immediately, and:
IT WORKED!!!
Massive respect!
A pitty there's no 'Forum Member of the Month' Award - I would have you nominated.
And now, after updating my signature from '4.0.3' to '4.1', I go and will praise your wisdom and capabilities on other posts - the German forum, for example, as there are people having the same problem.
Have a nice weekend. (because you just made mine! )
Tommy
P.S.: just one 'critisism': why couldn't you figure that one out friday night already?! Would have saved me some hours of the weekend... LOL... _________________ Roland Juno-106, MAM MB33-II, acidlab bassline & elektron machinedrum

Awesome, I'm glad I could help! If it really is the major issue, frankly I'm kind of surprised people at Steinberg hadn't found it sooner. But we'll have to see if it helps the others having the same problem before I prepare to receive any trophies...heh....
So, out of curiosity, were you using ReBirth 2.0 or was it some other ReWire thing?
- userzero -
PS - I didn't upgrade until last night (Saturday), that's why |

Hi userzero,
you see, you made quite some people happy already, because your fix worked for at least two more people on the forum...
And, without wanting to be too understanding ,
if the release was on tuesday, and by the time the first complaints arrive, and then the guys get to make the difference between the 'oh my god, Cubase's background is a darker shade of blue'-posts, and the once that really indicate a bug, and then to figure out what is going on if they can't reproduce it under their conditions (which is what Christian says in another sticky), it's probably weekend already...
But I am quite convinced that there will be a fix soon.
For the ReWire question:
I am not really using it a lot.
I have ReBirth, a Reason adapted installation and ableton live lite installed, and I installed Halion 3 by accident with the ReWire functionality, but I NEVER use ReWire itself, in the end.
Usually I work with Cubase - 98% of the time - and if I use something else, I do it standalone, export a file from there and import it into Cubase.
I'm a man, so I cannot do two things at a time, like driving a car and talking on the phone, using Cuabse and ReBirth simultaneously or sitting and peeing at the same time...
Anyway, thanks again for your great hint. The day was really nice from the moment I read your post!!!

Salut slinky,
I had two.
One in Windows/system and one in Windows/system32.
So I renamed both...
Good luck and good night!

Sorry, I guess I should have specified, the Windows error report kept mentioning the ReWire.dll in the Windows\system32 folder - that's the one I renamed...
I'm glad it's helped 1st attempt and the others - I know how frustrating a crashing Cubase can be... |

HAHA - "ReWhore.old" = much more creative than what I did LOL ... Glad it worked - although it is still a mystery to me why I had to do it in the first place... I hope Steinberg can at least explain it, if not fix it sometime... |

I just did the clean re-install.
Before I go back to the original Sample Rate issue I had(which is why I did the re.install)
I have to get the basic functions to work again.
How do I get my Yamaha Motif Rack ES set up as an instrument again ?
It doesn't show up on the external instrument panel and I can't choose it in the VST instrument window. _________________ Win XP PRO 32 / Cubase 5.5.1 Built 609/ Wavelab Essentials / Quad Core Q6600 2.4 gHz / 4 Gig RAM / 3 HDs SATA /

Joomusik,
I did a major registry clean today, and you wouldn't believe what I found... Nero7 files (supposed to be completely uninstalled) all over the place. Is it any wonder why CB4.1 is troubled... Some of these files certainly appear to have the same name ext's, but in the least after removing them I got mine to run for a while before crashing. And after re-reading the rewire.dll name change in system32- I might get up to where the rest of the pack is... exporting audio!!! Hell, even if it is in an unknown bit depth... It would be ten (I MEAN 100) TIMES BETTER than the past 7 days of disaster for me-
(I didn't actually pay attention before because I didn't use rewire, all live musicians pretty much here... but I have something else to attempt - better than watching the forum for the HOTFIX~)
Incidentally, Christian (Steinberg Germany) told me on the phone this morning that (HOPE GUYS~who like me still cannot get it to go~>) we can hope to maybe have the 4.1.1 by/(or hopefully/maaaayyybe he said before) the end of this year- (YES before the end of 2007!)

Tkwendt1,
I can understand your frustration and I am lucky that I'm not supposed to earn money with recording music.
This was the 1st time that I really had trouble with a Steinberg product since 10 years.
Can't you roll back to 4.0 until the probs will be fixed ? _________________ Win XP PRO 32 / Cubase 5.5.1 Built 609/ Wavelab Essentials / Quad Core Q6600 2.4 gHz / 4 Gig RAM / 3 HDs SATA /

Thank you Joomusik, I most sincerely appreciate your kind reply
I feel I am left stranded on the side of the road here with my brand spanking new shiny car... whilst many others constantly wiz by me who are blinded to anything other than the fact that they don't have their "comfort control settings working right"...
Tables turn all the time though, ...and the day will come~
God bless your world today Joomusik, and the other fine folks up here who talk to me-
As for those who ignore me, God bless you too!! (especially Chris B. who I would have messaged privately behind the forum doors..., but you can't ~ ...after all, you are ALL part of my world too whether you or I like it or not~
Hey nobody likes to be dissed- especially when they are frustrated, and so many up here act as if "THERE IS NO PROBLEM, what's wrong with you all whining and complaining?"~ Music is my livelihood- and I have kids to feed. I've talked for a straight week to techs in the US and Germany, and was told they would call me back (but they didn't), they also said that they weren't seeing this at all anywhere ... blah, blah, blah- notta call, not a solution except uninstall it then and consider it a waste of $$$ until they finally are willing to announce 'Yes, we do have a problem, and yes, we are working on it now."
I only wish the sample rate issue was my problem
-I guess I am just a dumb%*& from Nashville
Did I invest in the wrong product? _________________ ...soon to be Cubase 4.1.3.853

Hello,
I've installed the 4.1 update. It seemed ok at first, but there's al lot of trouble with the MIDI devices! In cannot import my/any MIDI setup... CRASH after CRASH.
That made me want to uninstall the whole thing, but C4 does not even appear in the installed software list. So even removing C4 is just not possible! I like that.... not!
System is Vista Home Pemium, which is fine (I think)...
Now what????
C4 was fine untill this update. Now I can do nothing at all. Can't use it or uninstall it.
Please Steinberg.... HELP! _________________ Cubase 4.03, Windows Vista 32 bit, Edirol FA-66 Firewire Audio, 3x Edirol UM3x USB MIDI interface |
