I've tried all the things suggested in Christian Dettner's posting, but I still can't get Cubase Studio 4.1 to install.

When the installing progress bar has got to around 27%, a box pops up with the following message:

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have correct upgrade patch."

I bought Studio 4 only a few days ago specifically to take advantage of the Vista compatibility offered by the 4.1 upgrade. I've never actually used version 4.0, only installed it, got my software key licence and then registered online. No previous version of Cubase has ever been installed on this computer.

Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue?

I'm using a Windows Vista Home Premium system.

Check out all other potential audio apps you may have uninstalled/installed in the past~ I had an issue with Nero7 (and I had completely un installed it) but the registry is where you may have issues- at least that's what I've felt contributed-

So I gave it another try, just to make shure it is not me. I followed excactly the instructions from Christan and uninstalled cubase 4.02, renamed the preferences folders to "*._backup" as stated.
After this a clean install from the original Cubase DVD. Then immediately updated to 4.1. Updated the synchro stuff and started the program. It loads and runs perfect.

So I made an 8 bar tune, 2 tracks, piano and drums, nothing more. I tried to export the audiomix. This took more than six minutes! Only 8 bars and two tracks, 14 seconds of music! Real time export only takes 14 seconds.

Back to 4.02. I created the same little piece of music. Exported it in in, what? less then 2 seconds. My conclusion is that there defenitely must be something wrong with the 4.1 update. I'm glad I was so carefull not to save one of my projects without a previous backup. Saved by this forum!!

I think I have quite a fast system: Pentium 950D, 4 Gig ram, lots of HD's

After spending a total of 8 hrs trying to install Cubase 4.1, I have found that ReWire is not working.

STEINBERG: PLEASE dont tell me that the only solution is to go back to 4.01?

To whom can I send the bill for 1000 USD for lost studio time waisted on installtion and debugging? Serious!!

PostPosted: Tue Dec 18, 2007 10:13 pm    Post subject: Crashes on plugin registration splashes Reply with quote

My cubase 4.1 kept on crashing when I had plugins that required registring at first start. When cubase loaded some of those plugin it just crashed. After registring those plugins in stand alone mode it worked fine. After installing gigastudio the problem returned. I then deactivated rewire within gigastudio and that would make cubase start again. After loading giga in stand alone mode and taking care of the registration business everything worked as a charm again with rewire enabled again.

The problem is that the various plugins splash screens were not displayed, it just crashed cubase. Especially with gigastudio. So you need to load the off-line in order to register.
Anyway, now it load ok every time.

Maybe this tip can take care of things for some people, but I doubt it is the source of all evil.

So....I DON'T have Windows Vista and....
DIDN'T have any trouble installing the 4.1 update. Good news, eh!?

Now....what DID happen is that all my patches for HalionOne appear to be missing!!! At least, that's what CS4.1 says whenever I try to click on a patch in the media bay.

Did I miss something? All my patches for Prologue seem to be in good order.

Help?

Well....I didn't want to listen to Christian (but I did). I didn't want to have to do a complete uninstall and re-install (but I did). I didn't want to have to waste time that i didn't have in the first place to fix a DAW that shouldn't be giving my trouble (but I did). I really didn't think it would work for my particular issue anyway (but it did). So, thank you Christian for your assistance. Thank you for this sticky.

Cubase suddenly does not recognize my M-Audio 2496 soundcard....my demo of Live 7 does...and my online radio....etc etc

so I downloaded the latest driver for the sound card...didn't help....?

do I have to perform all these procedures...?

OR can I uninstall and then just re-install the last version on disk? as that worked.

PostPosted: Sat Mar 01, 2008 5:33 pm    Post subject: so far so good Reply with quote

Just wanted to say thanks for the info here. Installed Cubase 4 for the first time last week following the steps here and it's working fine so far. Two new projects completed, and tweaked an old one in SX3 which is still running happily alongside. A couple of irritations which I'd consider fairly minor as long as they get fixed. Saved a lot of time with some of the new features, esp the flexible routing. Not in any way wanting to downplay the problems others have had, but for me the upgrade has definitely been worthwhile so might be worth a try (after a system backup of course). Didn't have any problems with rewire so seems this may be fixed.

I'm pretty conservative with my DAW as I rely on it for projects with very short deadlines and/or clients in. I bought Cubase 4 about a year ago to be able to upgrade to SX 3.1. This just before the announcement that a final version of SX 3 wouldn't be released. If I'd known that I would NOT have bought the upgrade, and I won't be buying the next one before a final version of Cubase 4 is out. Lots of people on the forum have been saying how stable SX 3.1 was and, while it was certainly good enough to get the job done, I could give you a list of issues which when you add up the amount of time wasted... Things like 'serious errors' on simple muting/unmuting of parts... Anyway, don't want to harp on about that. Haven't been to the forum for a while but it seems like the air has improved quite a bit lately, so maybe things are looking up.

OK, try this on. I tried to update as described above (installed windows installer 3.1...etc...), and cubase would then start to load and hit a fatal error and stop. then I tried to un-install and it said that the install was not a windows installer. Has anyone else had this happen???

any and all help greatly appreciated,

Krist

I just want to let you know that after reinstalling C4 with all updates as you described here I have had no problems at all with stability, crashes or anything nasty.

Before reinstalling I had allowed C4 to adapt all my setting from SX2.2 and I had a lot of errors, frozen graphics, 'save your work now' etc. but now it seems to be stable now.

(Not a word about the year waiting for the Midi export bug to be fixed...even that works now Razz )

best regards

I have Cubase4 working fine. I tried the 4.1 update last Ocober, but quickly gave up due to confusing messages. The sticky and it's advice to download windows installer just flled me with fear....my DAW is not connected to the web and to download from my office comp. and copy to my DAW is all too new for me. My question is: does anyone know if eventually a future upgrade will be as straight forward as all the other upgrades I have 'mastered' (VST32 SX1 2 & 3 ....pro 24 before that!). I'm happy with Cubase 4 and have loads of patience & don't mind waiting but will I wait in vain?

I don't know how a telephone really works but I have no problem calling people.

PostPosted: Fri Jul 04, 2008 4:04 am    Post subject: Please help! ASIO complications after upgrade install Reply with quote

As soon as I opened the new version after I installed the upgrade, my ASIO (from a Lexicon Alpha) began to hiss profusely (like a perpetual peak of white noise on a TV)...literally as soon as I switch from the Duplex X ASIO driver (which I have to do EVERY time I open Cubase...any way to keep it on my Alpha's ASIO?)...I did the uninstall and reinstall and had the exact same issues. So I uninstalled and went back to my version (4.0.1!!) and everything is working better -- with the ASIO that is...I'm having huge issues elsewhere.

The entire reason I wanted the upgrade was because I'm getting crashes EVERY TIME I try to "process" anything (fade in's, envelopes, etc), and I'm still having some issues with latency.

Please someone help!!! Seriously, this has been nothing but a trainwreck for me. I've been trying to work on a couple of projects, but this is absolutely useless...what a shame that I can't even use this for a VERY BASIC recording software! Please help.

PostPosted: Fri Jul 04, 2008 4:18 am    Post subject: Clarification Reply with quote

Just to clarify:

I do know that I have to have the 4.1.2 upgrade before I can install this new upgrade...

It's actually the 4.1.2 upgrade I'm having issues with...I want both upgrades of course...which is why I'm trying to install 4.1.2 so I can have the new one.

My known issues with 4.0.1 as of now:

Audio "hiccups" -- not latency issues, more like clicks, as though the audio were peaking, but it's not...this is happening on pretty much every track I record.
Process function causes crash without fail.
Some latency issues.

I know there are others I can't think of right now, but these are enough that I can't record ONE decent track that's not jacked up in some way.

Again, please help.

Make sure to go in sequential order. 4.1.0 then to 4.1.2 then to 4.1.3. When you go from 4.1 to 4.1.2 Steinberg wants you to have the original C4 DVD in your drive.

Thanx guys!

After reinstalling cubase the program doesn't have crashes anymore (so it seems... ) The crashes I experienced were very weird: When I just recorded stuff it crashed with a serious error after a few takes. When I clicked it away I just could go on working, but when I saved the project it made a new file: project_01 / project_02 ect...

I followed the steps described above. But first I copied my key commands and template from the preferences folder AND I copied the whole vst folder. Then I deleted everything, including the preferences. Then I installed cubase and placed the vst folder where it came from. After the first start of cubase I placed the key commands back and opened the template which I saved again as template. This was the perfect method for me Smile It works just fine. (knock on wood... Smile )

Hi,

Yeah, I was horribly unclear in my three messages ... sorry. I have version 4.0.3 currently and am trying to upgrade to 4.1.2 in order to finally get to the 4.1.3 upgrade...so, in short, I know I have to go sequentially -- that was what I made so unclear in my messages. So the problem I'm having is with the 4.1.2 upgrade...I haven't even gotten to the 4.1.3 to see if it will work for me because I had such a HUGE problem with 4.1.2 (namely my hardware's ASIO completely not interfacing with Cubase). Alright, thanks. Any other suggestions?

Dear all...

If you experience any difficulties applying the 4.1 update or adverse impact on stability, please take the following steps:

Requirement! Windows XP: You need Microsoft Installer 3.1 on your system!
If its not installed (comes via Windows Update if you have automatic updates enabled) please download and install manually. Our patchers rely on this Windows component.

Is this installer part of sp2 or was it released later?
