Hi philmarone,

Quote:
I must say that I did not read every thread of the CC121

sorry if you understood my statement as a request... I know that nobody can read everything before asking a question (although it's very interesting to see what others are commenting, and to learn a lot about this box...).

I thought there would probably be an official moderator from Steinberg...

I thought so too, but by tracking this topic "http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=114854" I changed my mind... Embarassed

Yesterday I sent a "Support Request Form" to Steinberg and I will report every respond they'll send (... hopefully Laughing )

... and today there was an answer from Steinberg via e-mail:

Quote:
Hello,

Unfortunatly this is a known issue, and currently the is no work around to change this behviour of the CC121.

Best regards
...

OK, it seems that the Steinberg team is aware of that behavior, and may be / hopefully there will be a solution later... Razz

But I'd say that not the CC121 should be chanced (because of the printed surface...) but there could be an option to change the layout of Cubase 5 in that relation (an option that should be available for CC121 users only).

Great product !

just needs 3 improvements :

- Left/Right Locator instead of Song Start/End (who uses those often when programming anyway?)

- Zoom Tracks vertical + horizontal via AI Knob (dunno how to implement - maybe with "shift"/jog knob)

- EQ handling (already mentioned)

Great controller nevertheless - just annoying that I have to use my keyboard all the time for the functions listed above (Locator + Zoom)

I will buy the CC121 as soon as the AI knob can change parameters on VST2 plug-ins. I think it would be a simple thing to do. I think it would be a simple thing to do, just implement a function in the code that checks if the current plug-in is VST2 or VST3. If it is VST2 or earlier then change the AI knob to "mousewheel mode" and whatever the mouse pointer is hovering over will be controlled by the AI knob.

1) jog wheel to simulate mouse wheel when not doing "AI"

yes please

2) start/end buttons to left/right markers

yes please

3) EQ "Q" and "Gain" controls to match onscreen

yes please

when?

Just received a CC121 today and there is a lot that I like about it, the communication timing between device and software seems tight. Smile

minor issues I have noticed so far:

1. Where there is a fade drawn as automation for a channel and the cc121 is currently controlling that channel's data, the motorised fader's movement doesn't always follow the path of the line that is drawn in cubase; there can be anything up to 2-3 seconds between fader movements instead of a continuous movement.

2. Where the pan is set in the mixer in cubase to be 'stereo dual 'panner', the pan knob on the unit only controls the left one of the pair of controls in the mixer. A push button control would have made a solution easy for this, but since there isn't one.. perhaps a button can be used in combination with the knob to control the right side?!

Features I'd really like to see added to the system via software updates:

1. Add a popup screen to cubase 5 which appears when the 'value' knob is held down which allows the user to cycle through a list of banks of setting combinations for the 4 'feature' buttons on the right side of the unit... So the user can setup a series of banks of shortcuts in the cubase device manager which are suited to common tasks that they perform; allowing for vastly expanded usability and functionality from those 4 simple buttons. Smile)

2. As many people have already mentioned, expand the usage of the AI knob to include VST2 plugin controls.

3. Add an optional 2nd popup screen that appears on top of cubase that displays which mixer channel is being controlled by the unit when the channel left and channel right buttons are pressed on the unit.. so even if the cubase window is full of plugin guis you know where you are.. (the popup boxed in the sequencer window is a great way to get around the lack of an LED readout on the unit in general).

4. As has also already been mentioned by others: the unit does not presently allow for automation tracks to be controlled by the motorised fader.. I can't see a reason not to allow that, it would be a great extension of the present functionality.. Its not just cubase mixer faders that are great to control with a motorised fader. Smile

If you add in all these features I may even buy a 2nd unit.. and graft on a 2nd set of arms... lol

cheers.

Dear Steinberg Team,

- I would truly appreciate adjustment of the AI knob sensitivity.
- I am missing the analog feeling of the EQ's (now they are very hard to use)
- It would really nice to use AI knob with VST2 (UAD) plugins. Otherwise the use of it may be limited.

Best regards,

Heikki

Ah, also.. as has previously been mentioned... regarding the order of the eq controls (gain, frequency and 'Q').. Since they are not in the same order as they appear in cubase and it is easier to change the software than recall all the devices Wink
a software update to cubase that changes the order of the controls to reflect how they appear on the CC121 would be very helpful.. (an option in the preferences for the user to choose whether to switch the order of the EQ controls in cubase or not would avoid confusing people who are used to how they are).

cheers.

Hi chris,
ive just purchasd the CC121 and i'm very happy with it being a cubase user since year dot makes my work flow increase by 60%!
apart from the usual grumbles from peeps on here eg-price,swapped eq etc i just would love to see these features in the next (overdue) firmware:

+AI KNOB-vst 2/automap style implementation for other non steinberg eqs/plugs and also to make this thing essential!also i wanna use c4/c3 legacy like REVERB A/B,TONIC and STEPFILTER!!

+SECONDARY MODE FOR FUNCTION BUTTONS-(maybe press in knob and gain access to 4 more assignable funtion buttons -totalling 8 for more keyboard!)

+SENSITIVITY-some kind of senstivity editable parameters/trim for the knob/eq

+BRIGHTNESS- a minor thing compared to the above but would help in my dark studio some brightness settings on the unit!!

PS;When is the next firmware available and is steinberg working on this please?
as you have asked in the sticky the feedback and theres been qute a lot to go on for inclusion in the next update!!
fingers crossed!!!!!!
Wink

Very dissapointing device...way too expensive for what it can do...

And to think that i spent 1,5 day getting this "plug and play" device to work... Rolling Eyes

The recent firmware update seems to have cured the crashes I was getting. The extra functionality in this update has made the unit very useful and justifies the price!

I'm wondering if there are any plans to add more User Definable sets for the function buttons? So User Def1 could be for project zooming. User Def2 maybe for locators. User Def3, etc...

And it's clever the way the software/hardware guys have used pressing two buttons simultaneously to switch eq/aux modes - I wonder if there are more combinations we could come up with! In a way it's a shame the unit doesn't have a dedicated 'shift' button, but I realise design of the unit didn't cater for multi-function buttons. But I think the more functions we can load onto this thing the better!

So pressing EQTYPE, LOCK, BYPASS, and JOG simultaneously can get the CC121 to make tea! Cool

Just installed the update 1.5 and still wondering, why I can't access to the Master "e" button.
I'm not sure, but in my opinion, to do a final mixdown, there must be a possibility to access also the master section of the mixer with the CC121 without using the mouse.

What do you think??

now i understand that these buttons perform "previous marker" and "next marker", and I like that behaviour.

So I am merely asking that the left and right markers be included as markers in this scheme.

cc 121 and cubase 5.

In device set up in Cubase no selecting cc121 midi in and out possible.

I installed the cc121 by installing tools and the Yamaha usb midi driver from the original installing cd.
Then updated to the recent 24 august cc121 update and updated the latets Yamaha usb midi driver.

Cubase device Set Up shows the cc 121 but the midi in and out of the yamaha driver can not be seleceted. Only the already other midi
equipment shows. FROM THE MANUAL I learned that midi in and midi out should give the chance to selectthe cc121 in and out as mididevices (though the manual a only shows it by a screenshot without any advice how to add the midi in and out of the cc121 when they are not listed.

A deeper look into the yamaha midi driver learned that the latest driver was installed but dit not function properly.

Can anybody HELP me and explain how solve my problem.

I've read the instruction in this forum to delete some windows32 midi registers. But I'm am not sure if that will do it and more uncertain of what I might delete causing mote troubles.

Please be sure I will apprecaite your advise.

Kind regards

Harry Leushuis

Coming from a Mackie control, I find the Jog knob to be small and also laking grip.
Few thick rubber bands placed around it have made it much easier to manipulate.

My CC121 works flawless with Cubase 4.5, so nice job steinberg!
Got one future update request:
-Please make it possible to "jump" to the masterfader instantly by pressing (for example) both the channel selection buttons at the same time, so the motorized fader becomes the masterfader.

This way we can control the master volume etc. easy

(got 1 problem here though...http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=124425)

thank you!

Hi there, trhe CC-121 is a winner in Cubase, I was using it within 30 minutes and almost with my eyes only checking the screen.

no comments, only this one: CC-121 is delivered with Cubase AI 4, I wish they made Cubase AI 5 available.

PROs: Solid. I like the steel case. Keeps solidly in one place on my working surface.
Matches the Cubase layout, easy to learn.

CONs:
=$400??? Too much. Sell it without the software please. Most of us have C5 and won't be using the AI software Personally, I think $200 is the correct price for this piece of hardware.
=Too many black on black items. You have black buttons and EQ knobs on a black silk screen background. Increased contrast makes for enhanced usability. Shocked
=Ditch the "chrome" on the fader. Makes it look cheap, like an old part of a 70's car
=Replace the small AI knob with a 50mm diameter jog wheel, to allow for 1 finger operation
=The power cord retainer clip is a good idea but useless as implemented. Cord will not stay in the hook.

Costs too much to be competative, but I like it.

I posted this on the main forum first by mistake!

In the Control Room Mixer, it would be nice to be able to assign the function buttons and value knob to the studio output levels AND Monitor On/off Switch and Monitor Level simultaneously.

Eg. Buttons 1, 2 and 3 assign the value knob to the Studio out levels and Button 4 assigns it to the Monitor out level.

As it stands the function buttons and value knob only control either the studio levels or the monitor section at one given time.

Please help if I have missed something

Thanks,

Marcus.

Option to be able to use it with other controllers.

The work flow when EQ it is awesome but, the lack of more father when mixing breaks down that work flow.

Finally managed to install the cc121!

First of all this unit is definatly NOT plug & play!

took a lot of faff emailing steinberg, looking up forums, downloading new drivers, updating the unit and re-installing pc but finally managed to get it communicating with cubase.

The way i managed to get it working was to download the most recent TOOLS for cc121 V1.51, intstall them first and then update the units firmware with V1.50.

Here is a link to this for any future buyers - http://www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=2747&L=1

Do this before trying the really annoying registery edit that steinberg point you in the direction of.

Here is that link - https://www.steinberg.net/en/support/knowledgebase_new/show_details/kb_show/problems-with-the-installation-of-midi-drivers/kb_back/2020.html?tx_p77sbknowledgebase_pi1[product]=156

So, feedback on finally using the unit after one day with all the updates and so on...

Really like the unit, has a solid build, eq section feels nice on endless knobs, transport is handy, channel select is sweet with all the additional folder options, ai knob is usefull but still needs some work, user function section is ok but again needs work. the motorised fader is cool as f**k!!!

Things that need definate adjustments -

Muting and soloing folder tracks - most of my songs are in folder tracks and groups and i like to solo vocals on their own or drums, synths... For some strange reason you can navigate these easily but you cant use either M or S buttons above the channel select!? that defeats the purpose of not having to use the mouse to navigate the folders.

Need to be able to record automation of quick controls 1-8 on vst2 plugins while in quick contol mode.

Locking AI knob to vst2 plugins

Attaching AI knob to recorded automations - cant express how irritating this is! this is one of the reasons i bought the unit so i could edit automations easily!

More user asignable eq section - being able to assign it to zooming in and out of selection the same way you could assign function section.

When keeping finger on mute or solo it would unmute/unsolo ALL the track at once like the wee tab button at the top of the track listings.

These are just a few things i found after using it for one evening.

All in all its a nice unit but its most definatly unfinished and in need of another firmware update to sort a few things out that it should have been able to do when it was released!

I am still disappointed to see that there has been no attempt to make the CC121 controls illuminate. I find the black-on-black of the transport controls very unintuitive; and having the unit display the varying brightness levels at start up only serves to annoy - the hardware is completely capable of displaying a low-level illumination when the button is not active, and lighting at full intensity when it is.

Please implement this.

Considering buying this. Seems like (most) problems have been solved with the update. I am wondering if anything changed concerning assigning the AI knob to VST2 plugins from 3rd parties.
If that would be possible I would be sold, that would really make this thing set itself apart.

I've had the CC121 for a couple of weeks now. I really like it - great job, Steinberg.

How about an 8-channel extender unit? Now that could be pretty cool.

+1

Also, will there be an improvement on the EQ knobs? They are pretty much useless as they are now. An otherwise great product is severly marred by these shortcomings.

Just got a CC121 and very happy with it.
Sold my Novation controller for it and don't regret it one bit.
The integration of the CC121 works great.

The device is not cheap, but the build quality is excellent, which makes it worth the price.
I prefer spending a few € more, rather than getting a typical "Chinese quality" controller with wobbling knobs, noisy faders, plastic construction, etc.
