Some of the VLN patches emit a full velocity short release as if the bow is changing direction, but it is very loud and distracting, very artificial. Even a low velocity sustained note ends in a loud burst. Has anyone witnessed this, and how might I avoid it?

Are you talking about legato patches?

Possibly?

Do you have any suggestions for alternatives?

I believe this happens if the release velocity (NOTE OFF velocity)
is fast (high).
I tried HSO and encountered the same behavior
and I don't like it too much because it's way too strong.

If you go into your editor and lower the release velocity
the effect vanishes.
Also if you are using a keyboard and take your fingers
off the key slowly enough (but I can't play like this ...)

I have recently purchased the HSO 16bit edition that came with Cubase 5 and had the exact same problem. It was driving me nuts and it took hours, frankly, but it seems I have figured out the reason: occasionally, identical double notes appeared in my MIDI tracks. Once I removed the clones, the violin and viola tail bursts were gone! You can only spot such notes in the list editor, btw, and unfortunately, the burst didn't appear consistently in each run, so it probably makes sense to review all MIDI tracks for such double notes.

(Now I only wonder why the note duplicates appeared after all, since they were not present in my original tracks and only appeared after freezing some randomization from the MIDI modifiers...)

Hope this helps,
Markus

Hello fellas.

The answer to my question is the VELOCITY knob. Have no idea why velocity only effects the tail of strings, and in such a weird way, but it's nice that I've finally found out why. Also you may find it useful to play around with the velocity knob on other sources, I think it works a bit differently than a usual vel control.

Long ago in my novice days I had the double note problem. My problem came down to my midi patching. My controller keyboard has usb and midi output, and I had both running.

All of my old Cubase VST songs have double notes, and when you take them out the songs fall apart LOL. Back then I guess I mixed around these sort of issues. Tell you what, it is a pain to get rid of double notes, since 'delete doubles' does not work. ahem.

If you play with attack and release you get it right. Depends on the instrument. However with certain tempos you want a certain attack... HSO won't let you.

But it's such a great sounding VST... I also wish they would fix things.
