I'm getting random bursts of white noise in my CI2. It has nothing to do with the program, van be cubase, can be winamp, can be wavelab. The only things connected are the USB cable and the earphones.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't something that is CI2 in general, but probably my exemplare that has a bad soldering or something. Sounds just like that.

I did some tests yesterday. Hooked up a guitar and started recordin in C5. After a while I got a burts of noise. I stopped recording and played it back. Nothing in the recording! Must be some fault in the monitoring bus. I'm sure it's just my copy and not a general problem. I've sent a copy to Thomann, where I bought it, and see if I can replace it.

Ok, it's both in the headphone and line out sections, so I guess it's a bad soldering in the monitor bus somewhere. I'll return it to Thomann and get a new one.

I dont think its a soldering problem as much as a Software/Hardware prblem.
It would be nice to hear from more owners.

Did you guys try to change ASIO buffer size ?
Then phenomenon changed ?

In my experience, sometimes other device, like WiFi, disturbs audio drivers.
(Of course it depends on...)

I've tried lots of things:
Shut down internet
Shut down MacCaffee
Shut down anything else I didnt need running.
I tried different buffer settings and nothing helped.

I was running Reaper without a hitch with my E-Mu.
Never an audio problem.
Since running under Vista 64 may have been an afterthought , they may not have worked out the bugs.

Well, it sounds like a bad soldering. It sounds like when you turn a knob with lots of oxidation in it, but I tried knocking a bit on the CI2, (gentle...), and no noise then.
As I said, the noise is not recorded, so it have to be on the monitor bus somewhere. That leads me to think that it's a faulty component or soldering. If it was a hardware/software problem, r something with the drivers, the noise would be recorded, right?

OK, been checking with development and QA, and we've not seen this problem here. So it would be great to get some more data on this, specifically:

- Does the noise go away if you change the USB port on which the CI2 is connected?
- Which USB cable are you using, the one included in the package?
- Are you using a USB hub?

If anyone has this and sends the unit back to the dealer, could you let us know in this thread? We can get it back here for testing.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Angus

I've tried changing the USB Port, no luck
I've tried changing USB cable from the one that was included to another one, still no luck
I'm not using a USB hub, well, I'm using a hub, but the CI2 is not attached to that, could this be a problem?

I get something similar to what you describe (white noise bursts) on my laptop at any latency setting <512. AT 512 it seems to work fine. Kind of a drag to record at that high a latency since you have to rely on the mix setting being heavily on the input side.

There you go! I raised to 1024 and the noise dissapeared. I'm running a Intel Xeon with 3.25Gb RAM. So it's not a bad soldering after all..... Now, running at 1024 isn't practical when recording though. Any suggestions?

Ok, recap over my problems:

I get random bursts of something that sounds like white noise in my monitirs/headphones on random occations.
If I get it while recording, the noise does not end up on the track, so it's just in the monitor bus.
I can get these noises even when working in Wavelab, streaming one stereo file, so can't be a prestanda problem.
I've tried changing the USB port
I've tried changing the USB cable
The CI2 is not connected to a USB hub although I have a USB hub in my system. (The Cubase dongle is in the hub)

I tried raising the the buffer from 512 to 1024 and the problem seems to have gone. I've worked the whole day, both in Cubase and in Wavelab without experiencing any problems
My system specs:

PC with Win XP Sevice Pack 3
Intel Xeon 2.33GHz
3.25Gb RAM
Cubase 5.1

1024 gives me a latency that's not practical to work with while recording, so this is not a real option. As I said, I'm geting these noises while working in Wavelab, with one stereofile, so it can't be a prestanda problem.
Any ideas?

Ok, stoped everything that has to do with wireless connections, firewall and virus protection. And, it seems to work! Haven't had much time to test it, but it seems fine. If it is, I'm happy asp a clam!

I am seeing (hearing) the same thing. Doesn't matter if it's Cubase or iTunes or a web browser - any time audio is playing back there are sporadic and seemingly random short bursts of white noise. Doesn't affect recording, just playback.

It only began the day I switched over from my firewire interface (Yamaha Go46) to the CI2.

Win XP Home, SP3
Dell with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz
2 GB RAM

C5, iTunes 8, Firefox 3.5

Do you have any wireless stuff going on, or virus program? Does the niose disapear if you raise the buffer?

Nothing Wireless.

I'm using Avast for antivirus.

Not sure how to change the buffer in Windows XP.

Hi,

We managed to reproduce the problem only on computers running Windows. As far as we can see it's not related to the hardware unit but to specific combinations of computer settings. We're investigating and we'll keep you updated about our progress.

You guys would know better than me but I think the driver may need a little rework. On a dual core laptop I should be able to go below 512 on a 2 track recording. Otherwise it's a great device for my needs for a portable guitar/vocal rig and the interactive recording feature is great.

Ok, on my system it has to do with the wireless connection. I tried to reconnect it today, and the white noise came back directly. So, solution here are to shut down the wireless while working, and that's not a big issue, should be disconnected anyway!
