Hi,

How do you record keyboard splits (playing a different left and right part on your keyboard at same time) in Cubase if the keyboard doesn't transmit each part on a different midi channel.

Can you record the keyboard split on different tracks in Cubase, like the left part being recorded to track 1 and the right part to track 2?

Anybody can please explain how Cubase can do this? Thanks!!

Note: I only own VST 5 so I can't enter a key number. I am considering to switch to a newer version of Cubase, therefore I hope it's ok if I also ask some questions in those forums. Thanks!

As far as I know, you need a keyboard that can transmit on more than one MIDI channel to do that. Unless you are using a plugin that allows you to split the keyboard at the software level, and as far as I know, Cubase doesn't have that built in. It seems like those exist but I'm afraid my memory is not much help to either of us at the moment...Haven't needed to do this so I can't help you find it, sorry...

Hi Dance,

there are several ways to do this, depends on what you're aiming at.
You can use Input Transformer for realtime recording or select all your left hand events and change their MIDI channel in one go in the Key Editor.
Note that there's no 'floating split point' yet.

Of course, you don't need all that if your keyboard can transmit different parts of your keyboard on different MIDI channels.

You can "split" a midi keyboard only using one midi channel. Load a transformer for the midi inserts of the midi tracks you want to control. Select (check)
the Delete function in the upper left hand corner of the transformer edit window. In the condition definition window the fields are: FilterType Condition
Parameter1 Parameter2 bool.

Compose two lines such that:
FilterType Condition Parameter1 Parameter2 bool
TypeIs Equal Note And
Value1 LessorEqual B3

This will delete all notes Less than or equal to B3 going to whatever VSTI is assigned to that track. This would be the right hand. For the left hand use almost
the same thing except the Condition would be Bigger instead of LessorEqual. Also, when composing these lines if you double click on the paramter field it will
turn Black, and you simply play the key you want to split at and it will be entered automatically. Sometimes it is a key name ie. B3; and sometimes it is numeric,
ie. 59. Dont know why.

You can compose more complicated definitions using a combination of the parenthesis and bool,(boolean operators). I also delete CC7 in the keyboard split
transfomers as I dont want my VSTI's volume to be changed. I set the VSTI's volume outs at a fixed level and control my Firepods Master Fader for overall mix level.

I also have a couple of "stuck keys" that always send max volume and I transform these with another midi-insert to a more generally average level by describing:

TypeIs Equal Note And
Value1 Equal A4 And
Value2 Eqaul 127

Then If you have Transfom selected in the upper left hand corner instead of delete, a second window appears below with:
ActionTarget Operation Parameter1 Parameter2
Value2 Settofixedvolume 70.

I also use Any midi channel for the midi tracks channel setting instead of 1,2,3 or whatever, then my VSTs are set to individual channels and this gives me the best
inidvidual control over channels and instruments. I do have multiple mid-channels, but I use two instances of my NI Akoustic Piano both on channel 1 and split one to
the Right hand and another to left as described herein. I have A VST Base Guitar on midi channel 2 also split like the Left hand Piano, (talk about Piano Bass). And
several other VSTs split to various areas of the keyboard. It makes quite an interesting instrument.

Hope this helps, and happy music making.

I think I manage to follow most of ttjpats instructions on how to create a MIDI split using the transformer window, but I am having trouble getting the transformer window to sort out the unwanted notes / route them to a different VST. I am using Cubase Studio 5 and I can't seem to find the "delete function in the upper hand corner of the transformer window". Has this been moved to a different place or is there something I have missed gravely?

If anyone could elaborate just a little I would be very thankful.
Best,

In the upper right hand corner of the transformer toll are the selections Delete, Transform, Instert and Insert exclusive on my C4. I am not familiar with Studio 5.
Seems like it should be similar.
