Video Format Question: .AVI format

Between last week and this week been in a Composer Internship [w/ a major tv commercials' music producer] to compose to commercials, television & movies. Our recording software allows opening video in order to facilitate this via hrs/ mins/ secs/ frames, etc. w/ files .mov, .qt, .avi. Funny thing too...ours SHOULD open those previously mentioned files, but only opens our .avi files...stating certain filters are missing to open the .mov or .qt files. Confusing when our QuickTime player opens them..this happened to anyone too?

Does the format ".avi" normally strip the audio from the video? This happens when we use other graphics/ movie software, but wanted to know if this was a default of that particular format.

ps: we use still other movie software to convert to streaming media usually for the web when we're done though. However, was curious about our above inquiry for when we receive projects to compose to commercials and such that need to be in a format such as mpeg in the final stages.

Thank you in advance.

avi is simply a container. the file can be encoded with one of an almost endless array of codecs. i haven't use cubase vst for a very long time but i'm sure there will be a list somewhere of the exact file formats and codecs it works with. divx, xvid, h264 and mpeg should be avoided as they are primarily delivery formats and not suitable for use in a daw.

Thanks Max,
much appreciative for the info...I'll check a list. It's always good to know HOW something works [at times] and not just THAT it works (ie. foundation for later updated versions of things) which is why I'm thankful for your explanation for the .avi format. In one movie-making app we have, it always strips the audio and leaves the video soundless.

ps: yeah, we usually leave the mpeg for delivery in final stage too (smile).

Thanks again...

Much success w/ your projects too !
