First question about the HALionSONIC:

Will there be an upgrade path from Hypersonic (2) to HALionSONIC?

And how is Halion Sonic im comparison to Hypersonic2 in terms of ressource optimization? One of the big strengths of Hypersonic was that it performed great even on a weak computer with less RAM, and having an extremely short program change time. AFAIC Halion Sonic comes with a huge load of samples. Does that mean that it needs 1 GB of RAM and 10 seconds to change a patch?

Yes, there will be an upgrade path, but unfortunately I have no info about the pricing.

Quote:

One of the biggest points of criticism is/was the soundquality of HyperSonic2. That's the other side of the coin if one wants to have low ressources.
Our aim is to suit both needs with HALion Sonic. Most programs will change within a second or less, some need a few seconds and only a few programs need an appropriate amount of time in relation to their size.
To make those huge programs even more acceptable there will be small and medium program versions with less articulation layers in it, to reduce loading times. Finally, reference should be made to the fact that the loading process of HALion Sonic will not block any user action. You can do other things in HALion Sonic or your host application while the loading of programs continues.

There will be of course an AU version too!

Wow - I'm glad there is going to be an upgrade path. Shocked I didn't expect that when I first read about it. Smile

Dear Gerrit Junge, a few questions for you please:

1. Is this yet again based off the Motif? If so which one? One's?
2. How much better does it sound compared to Halion One,(I was not impressed), sound examples in advance ,would be nice.
3. Does it support sample import? If not, would it work well with Halion 4? could they work together?
4. Editing in Hypersonic 2 was extremely easy yet very deep, dealing with samples with Elements, is it based on this same technology,is it even better?
5. Name the programmers of the synth? If Yamaha sound design team, can you say the names?

Thanks, very interested in this,thanks

And what about a vst 2.4 version ?

HALion Sonic will be cross-platform compatible with 32/64-bit for Windows and Mac OS X (32-bit only), supporting VST3, VST2.4 and AU hosts (Mac OS X)

Quote:
1. Is this yet again based off the Motif? If so which one? One's?

This is not so easy to explain. However, HALion Sonic is a combination of a "sampleplayer", "rompler and "synth". "Sampleplayer" actually means that the samples were made exclusive for HALion Sonic, are quite massive with different articulations and find its complete expression in conjunction with the VST Expression support of Cubase 5. But even in Standalone mode or as PlugIn in Logic, DP, Sonar, Live, .... with the build in "Flexphrase" ( a module for driving beats, arpeggios and complex tonal phrases, plus automatic articulation switching) there is a lot of space for creativity and inspiration.
"Rompler" indicates the relation to real hardware workstations refering to the space saving "ROM" which ensures cpu efficiency and short program change times. The "ROM" contains samples taken from the Motif but also samples made exclusive for HALion Sonic.
"The Synth" is a virtual analog synthesis engine offering multiple oscillator types like cross-modulation which is close to "FM" and XOR modulation which provides a wide spectrum, selected to get twisted by the powerful new filter (morphing between up to four filter-types, serial- and parallel filter mode)

Quote:
2. How much better does it sound compared to Halion One,(I was not impressed), sound examples in advance ,would be nice.

As member of the development team its neither fair nor objective to judge about the sound , but HALion One and HAlion Sonic are poles apart.

Quote:
3. Does it support sample import? If not, would it work well with Halion 4? could they work together?

No sample import, but the ability to expand the library with optional soundpackages. All sounds "modified" within HALion Sonic will be loadable in HALion 4. What is meant by "could they work together"?

Quote:
4. Editing in Hypersonic 2 was extremely easy yet very deep, dealing with samples with Elements, is it based on this same technology,is it even better?

As we were forced to build HALion Sonic from ground up, I'm quite sure that there will be users out there who will miss one or the other function of Hypersonic. But I'm very sure that there is one or the other function in HALion Sonic that will make most users forget about Hypersonic.

Quote:
5. Name the programmers of the synth? If Yamaha sound design team, can you say the names?

Even though they are all listed in the "About" screen of HALion Sonic, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to publish their names here.

best regards
Gerrit

Looking forward to this. I hope it will be a worthy successor to Hypersonic 2, and judging from Gerrit's answers, it might very well be. Smile Glad to hear there will be a path for upgrades as well.

Upgrade path?
Didn't expect that! Very Happy

Does that mean HALsonic will include the entire Hypersonic sound library (in the same way that Omnisphere contains all of Atmosphere)?

Or will they be entirely distinct instruments?

Thanks.
Cool

I'm curious as to why HALionSonic is considered an "upgrade" to Hypersonic 2? Are they actually RELATED in any way whatsoever? (i.e. any sample set carryovers or mutual compatability, similar patches, similar organization, similar interface, etc).

I don't see any simularities myself, but I'll certain welcome the reduced upgrade pricing! Smile

Good question. wonder if HS2 patches will be able to load in it? HS2 content was small, maybe Avid wouldn';t mind reselling the content back to steinberg to make former customers smile..lol doubt they would even consider it.. worth asking though Cool

Additional info on Halion Sonic from the Halion 4 blog.

Dave

http://www.steinberg.net/en/community/halion4blog/blog_details/archive/2010/03/30/article/halion-sonic-anounced-at-musikmesse-1060.html

HALion Sonic announced at Musikmesse
March 30, 2010 | HALion Sonic

Hi everyone, apologies for the tardiness in getting you updated. As you can see, we have announced the upcoming HALion Sonic workstation VSTi, which uses a lot of technologies that you will be seeing in HALion 4. The work on HALion Sonic and preparing the launch at Messe has kept us from updating the blog regularly, but I hope (again!) that we'll be able to increase the post frequency now that HALion Sonic is on its way...

As the Steinberg person who's in contact with the industry trade press and one of the people working with our endorsers, I was doing A LOT of demo sessions with HALion Sonic. It actually proved very difficult to talk about all the functionality - there's just so much to talk about; each demo lasted up to 30 minutes or so which just wasn't enough. We already talked about the layers system in HALion 4 here on the blog, so it was cool for me to see the layers system in action for the first time in HALion Sonic - and very flexible it is, too. The filtering system in HALion Sonic is amazing. Now, the H4 feature set isn't yet final, so I am speculating here, but if HALion 4 'only' gets all 24 filter types with the seamless morphing in several different configurations that's in HALion Sonic (including a great 4-way filter with X-Y axis morphing on a 2-D disply a là Kaoss pad), it'll be really cool.

What really knocked me out was the synthesis engine in HALion Sonic. It's very powerful, being totally editable with all sorts of ways to design your own sounds. There are 3 main oscillators, noise control, ring modulation as well as 32 (!) LFOs that you can route to almost any parameter. So for the synth friends and the sound designers, there's a huge feature set on offer. On the HALion Sonic version we were showing visitors at Messe we only had a small content set version, as the full library is still being finalized. But if the small sample of the content is anything to go by, the final HALion Sonic library will have excellent quality. Actually I found out that it's by the same sound design team that did the MOTIF series for Yamaha! And that bodes very well indeed for the H4 library which will, of course, be much larger. I also really liked the HALion Sonic GUI (with an orange version of the HALion 4 glowing ball), and I would expect (actually hope is more appropriate) that HALion 4 will have a similar feel. Helge has told me that the H4 GUI will have a different colour scheme, though. But we'll be posting more screenshots from H4 here as well in the next few weeks.

You can check out more on HALion Sonic here:

http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vstinstruments/preview_halion_sonic.html

All the best,

Angus

Please just make it sound like the same sound quality as the hardware motif, with excellent sound quality, conversion - do it right please - in manyways if the programmings done well enough, and since it's yamaha it's not impossible, it may be able to be better no on some levels? I think this may one of the best products ever if you can. Cool

Think XS,Think Tyros please Wink

I love the whole idea of this. I liked the idea of Hypersonic when it came out, but didn't like the sound quality of the demos. Of course at that point I wasn't using computers for music-making at all. What this gives me is overall confidence in the company. I feel like I am partnering my music-creation talents and experience with a technology partner that wants to provide tools for me to succeed. The idea of a "rompler" (loosely defined) which makes use of Cubase's new articulation mode, as well as the 5.5 upgrade to Cubase shows me that the company is mature yet innovative. I've been riding the train with a temp ticket via Cubase Studio 5. Have been "dating" other DAWs via their demos. Keep coming back to the idea of Cubase as a base platform for comprehensive modern music making. I will look forward to getting HalionSonic.

I've been waiting for a team of workstation sound designers for ages to do something like this, and Yamaha are among the best, vs. the current software developer plugin usual suspects. Wink Can't wait to hear audio demo's - if any know of any please post them, when they become available.

I think it's gonna be a dynamite VSTi, especially for Cubase users. I can't wait to see some video and hear some audio demos. There is one German music website which has created three YouTube videos for Halion Sonic with Angus. Just search for "HalionSonic" on YouTube. I think the outfit is called "Delmar".

Great, it looks cool in a NI kind of way. Smile

I am so happy that I got HS2 working on both Mac Pro & PC Dual & PC Quad (in different studio rooms).

I do have 3 HS2 dongles, you know. Smile
