Perhaps one for the FAQ:

Can Cubase 5 be installed alongside Cubase 4?

Obviously it would be nice to be able to gradually migrate to the new version, and of course we know Steinberg won't allow a C5 project to be opened in C4 etc., but things might be a little more complicated than the move from 3 to 4 because of HALionOne which was introduced with Cubase 4, as it does not reside in the Cubase installation folder. For example, does the installation of C5 update HALionOne? If so, will the updated HALionOne open in Cubase 4?

I think Cubase 4 will blow up your PC if it installed too close to C5..........at least that is what I heard. Shocked

What he means is, yes, you can indeed have both of them installed.

There could be alot of problems here, your own presets in media bay, duplicated? added to common files? New indipendenant + import from older version?

I really hope they know what they are doing here!!

After all they started it for our own good!!!

Time will tell!!

It could be fun!!!

Exactly. Remember the database for Mediabay is stored with your other settings. If the installation process imports C4 settings, and you load a C4 project, will the C5 project then reference the (older) C4 plugins? I'm sure the good people at Steinberg have thought of this of course, so it should be possible to get a definitive answer before purchasing the update.

... or have I just delayed the release date by a few months? Think

yes you can.

You can add VSTplugin locations if there's anything a new version can't access

But VST locations can only be specified for VST2 plugins though, right?

I have sx 1, sx 2 sx 3 and C4 installed on the same mono CPU laptop and they don't blow anything! You run only one of them each time Very Happy . The VSTs may be shared, obviously! You just need some disk space (some 800Mb uncompressed in my case).

I'm lazy you know, and I don't want to risk to lose some time when I have to open old projects. Cubendo is backward compatible, (almost always Wink ) but there are a few difference for instance in score and for old Vsts, and I am lazy, as I told you...

Thanks for all the replies.

I know you can have 4,3,2 and 1 installed on the same machine, but the situation is a bit more complicated since the introduction of VST3, HALionOne, VSTSound, MediaBay and other factors such as Vista. It's specifically the question of whether there may be conflicts if Cubase 5 is installed on a machine that that already has Cubase 4 installed that I'm interested in knowing. Only somebody who already has Cubase 5 can answer this, which is why I'd like one of the beta testers, or somebody from Steinberg to comment if possible.

Hello John,

I have more then 20 different Cubase installations on the same machine. No problem.

The installaer of Cubase 5 looks if there is a HalionOne etc --> No double content. I have Cubase 4 & 5 running on several machines (Mac/PC) for several months now and no conflicts.

Gr,

Chris

So if you change a tag on a soundfile in the Cubase 5 Mediabay will this not effect the soundfile tags in the Cubase 4 Mediabay?
