TasCAM US-1641 crash on Mac OSX 10.6.4?

Im running a tascam us-1641 with cubase. sometimes everything works okay, but whenever i try to open a project file, my mac freezes. it seems whenever my mac communicates with the device, it freezes... only thing i can do is follow the instruction window on screen that tells me to hold down the power button to restart the computer.

i have eliminated cubase being the problem, as with the tascam not connected everything seems to work fine.

i have installed the latest driver from the website for the tascam, including the firmware (using another computer, since it crashes when trying to run the install)

i cant think of what else to try. any suggestions?
