|
|
It seems I have been using this program for so long and it still excites me to dive deeper and do more testing on this ancient platform of OS9...
I have owned a retail computer repair/sales store from 1994 to present 2010 and I worked on many systems, IBM PC --> Quad Core Zeon HP, Apple II --> Quad Mac G5.
I am fluent from Mac OS 7 to Snow Leopard, yet for my music, I can't seem to get VST 5/32 and Mac OS 9.2.2 out of my mind; they are both so amazing as the last
incarnations of the perfection of codified thought (as close as programming code can be); Mac OS 9.2.2 was the pinnacle before being scrapped / re-written into OS X and
VST 5 was also the flagship before being thrown out for a re-write.
It is now 2010, an I feel like Will Smith in "I am Legend" .. I may be the last one left....at any rate, if you read this much, I will share some discoveries, you may or may not know
The following hardware discoveries (under OS 9):
500 GB Ultra IDE drives work just fine in a MDD G4 1.25 or G4 QS 933 (Both are amazingly fast under OS9 and VST 5/32); they both have 48-bit addressing and can use large Non-Sata / fast modern drives
(Note: the QS 820-1342-B motherboard will support drives larger than 120GB) The MDD 1.25 single (OS 9 Boot version) can support 4 internal Large IDE Hard drives (2 Ulta-66 and 2 Ultra 100)
Keep all OS 9 partitions to 190GB or smaller or you cannot defrag them under Norton Speed disk 6.0.3, so each 500GB drive should end up with 3 partitions, copy the system folder to all partitions, so that
booting can be switched (by holding the Atl key) so that you can always defrag the other non-boot drives
OS 9 can support up to 1.5 GB RAM, but many systems become unstable in VST if there in more than 1 GB. VST and OS 9.2.2 work incredibly well with many plug-ins with exactly
1GB RAM. You can Allocated 500,000 or more and Cubase works fine, try to get a unit with as much cache as possible on the CPU, 733 QS with 256K cache sucks compared to a 933 or 867 with 2 MB Cache for audio recording.
Old PowerCore PCI cards (have 4 Motorola CPUs) are down to $100 on ebay and have world class plug-ins that do not tax the G4s CPU under OS9 including Master X3 Powercore Plug-in (not avail
on PowerCore element PCI card, but on original full length card)
Halion 1.13, Grove Agent 1, LM4 mk II, Warp, are all great Cubase plugins under OS 9. Sonic Powerbudle (was about $300) and was released free to the OS9 community in 2003 and is more amazing then Wavelab under OS 9 with Online and Offline processing and VST plugins that work awesome.
Does anyone know if Halion 2 or Recycle 2 work under OS 9, if so exactly what versions ?

VST 5.1r1 and 5.2pb are both stable, but have different set of bugs, notable 5.2pb crashes on prepare master so just prepare archive.
Record all tracks as 24-bit or 32-bit and VST/32 with apogee dithering on final mix (still sounds damn good today with the right hardware).
Original Apple Cinema 23" (lucite model) Display can go 1920X1280 under OS and you can see a big mixer and many open windows.
MOTU interfaces (under OS 9) benefit greatly with an external clock (big Ben or Lucid Genx192).
For small studios M-Audio Audiophile 2496 has ASIO 2 drives, low lacency, and MIDI In/out all on a single PCI card

VST5OS9, my brother, I am there with you!!!! This is my first post to this board and I also wish to declare my love for VST/32 and the classic mac operating system.
I am happy staying 10 years behind everyone else as I think I am very productive on a program I know inside out, and I can still produce tracks that are 24 bit/ 96khz.
By using this company, http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/G3_RAM.html, I have turbocharged my Beige G3 for very little money.
I was content running os9.1 but after reading your excellent post I feel invigorated to upgrade to os9.2.2 _________________ Beige Mac G3, OS 9.1, Cubase VST/32 5.2pb, Delta 1010, Reason 2.5, ReBirth, Native Instruments Pro 5, Steinberg LM4, Opcode Midi Translator II x 2, Novation BassStation, Waldorf Blofeld, Roland GR-1, Roland MC303, Mackie 1642, Lexicon PCM81, Hafler P1500, Yamaha NS-10's |

Wow, just found your post after a frustrating evening.... I am on a G5 2.0 with Cubase Essential 5. And I've had it!! I just cant seem to get used to it. The way windows open. I can never get my inputs right. My UAD causes latency even when switched off. Just the whole feel sucks compared to OS 9.2.2 and Cubase Vst 5. I'm really looking at going back to an OS 9 bootable system. Which is best? The G4 Dual 1.25 MDD? Or the later singlr 1.25 MDD?
The only real problem i ever had with VST 5 was the automation would go crazy after awhile(I could hear the changes but they would stop showing on screen etc..) |

Ah, may i join this group ?
I recently purchased yet another legacy mac: it's the G3 iMac running at 500 MHz ( sure not as fast as my iMac 2009 edition but it's only midi/audio and a few VST plugs ). I've run the course thru all the MDD and QuickSilver's and they were prototypes for Apple. I still have a QS Power G4 running at 933MHz.
Now I have to find all my Cubase VST 5 installers and wedge them into this iMac running what I refer to as the for real OS 9.2 and not the OS 9 from a machine running OS X ( i went thru that grief ).
I do have Cubase Essentials 5 installed/running in my iMac 2009 edition and am happy with that.
I plan to install Cubase VST 5 shortly and hope you folks will help me get it up and running on this iMac G3. I am still getting OS 9 back into my head and trying to find all the old softtware.
Any heads up about the set up. I've been a long time user of Steinberg's Cubase ever since the days of version 2, score editions.
I prefer to use Cubase for all my midi/audio recordings of my own works and recording some band performances by my friends.
Hope I'm accepted into this group. _________________ I wasn't going to do anything today - so far, I'm on schedule...

Thank you very much.
I'll download and give it a try today.
I have to download with/to my G4 and then transfer the file to my iMac G3 because i still can't get used to the OS 9 internet browser. |

Not a mac user, but I still use VST 5/32 on my DAW PC . I like it's interface better than later versions. 1st time I saw SX3 on a machine it looked like a clusterphuk. _________________ VST 32/5.1 W.L. 3.0 Aardvark Q10/Aark 24 Cards ASUS P5KC MB Q9300 CPU 4GBRam WinXP 3 Seagate HDD's Gigabyte Radeon PCIe dual Video 2 Sony 17" Trinitrons CD/DVD-RW Logitech Cordless Keyboard/Mouse
