I have a laptop with a SATA HDD that won't boot, has a corrupted message... tried putting the SATA laptop HDD in my DAW so I can retrieve all the files (pictures etc) before I try re-formatting it, for which the DAW boots up fine...probem is, when the Laps HDD is connected my DAW takes FOREVER to boot, and after it boots it takes another forever to get th eicons on the desktop and another forever for the start button to be able to respond to open My Computer.

So far I haven't been able to get as far as to be able to open the laptops HDD, as I had accidentally knocked the power cable from my PSU to the laps HDD without knowing and spent over an hour fooling around, didn't notice until I gave up yesterday.

But STILL, why would my DAW not want to boot up or take forever to boot when this laptop HDD is connected? And IF the DAW boots finally, why is it being bogged down? Is it because there's another Windows install on it? (laptop HDD has Vista, DAW has XP Pro) is there some sort of conflict on OS's? It DOES actually show an option to boot from the laps HDD if I press F8. But I had been selecting my DAW as boot (but yeah I did try the laps boot for kicks, no go as expected).

Should I get an external type SATA HDD hook-up cage (whatever you call it) and try connecting my laptops HDD to the DAW through USB instead to avoid conflict (if any is present). Again, I really can't boot my DAW up right while the laps HDD is connected....and I'm not about to try connecting the laps HDD AFTER I boot my DAW whiles it's powered...I'm pretty sure these things aren't hot swapable Shocked

Usually that will be because the laptop HDD is failing or has basically totally failed. An external case will make no odds. The slowdown is due to windows trying to access it, or having drive access slowed down a lot. Probably game over for the HDD, alas. I've had success with drives like this with the old freezer trick, but YMMV.

Hmmm...may be so that the HDD is dead, or on it's way as it did boot up a couple of times after, but then froze. It had some message about a missing Windows component. I've read about the freezer trick and on another HDD I tried several months ago it didn't help, no harm in trying again if no other option.

The reason I was thinking about an external case is that I thought I was told once before that if multiple HDD's had OS's installed, connecting it as an external will have less conflicts than connecting it directly to the mothet board, though if true not sure if that means all HDD's ie; IDE & SATA etc.

No, that's just a load of old twaddle - makes no odds whatsoever. Plus whether the HDD is S-ATA or P-ATA makes no odds either in that respect.

Sorry to hear of your HD woes.

I agree that whether or not it has an OS on it makes no difference. Your computer's bios will tell it where to go to boot up.

By the way, until this thread, I hadn't come across the word "twaddle" before. Interesting word. Cool

It's probably quite an English word. And being polite as everything else would have been *****d out of existence!

I thought djay was referring to it makes no difference on whether the laptops SATA HDD is connected to my PC via the motherboard directly, or via an external case ...with an OS on each. Oddly enough by pressing F8 I can select whether to attempt to boot up with my DAW's OS, or the laptops OS...if the laps OS is chosen, the same thing that shows up on the lap, shows up on the DAW. If I choose my DAW's OS, it will take forEVER to boot up while the laps HDD is connect...if disconnected, DAW boots fine again.

So it's sounding more like a HDD failure all the time.... :/ But I don't want to give up trying to retrieve the files as it's got a lot of pics of my 2 grandsons on it. We don't care about the HDD itself as much. I was directed to the Ultimate Boot CD, and in the proccess of downloading it now and will see if that boots the laptop, and if that HDD is accessable enough. Later option is the freezer trick.
