Been a long time since I was here. Wink

Okay - I've purchased the Cubase 5.5 upgrade from my SX3 version, and 5.5 will go on my new Intel MacPro - and I have a question to ask before I do the Cubase 5 install...

I still have my working G5 that uses SX3 (but will absolutely choke on Cubase 5); I'd like to keep it working - especially during this trransition when comparing older songs I started on the G5/SX3 to their new version transferred over to the new Intel/Cubase 5.5...

And if possible, I'd like to have both versions/machines open, rather than shut one machine down, swap the dongle, start up the other machine, check it, shut down... and so on.

And I figured I needed to get a new dongle anyway (my old one is held together by Scotch tape) - but here's my question:

Is it possible to run my original version of SX3 on its original machine, and the new upgraded install of Cubase 5 on the new machine if I buy a new eLicencer?

Thanks in advance,

kirk, aka x$ (ignore the old sig, I need to update it)

no.

the c5 update will require you to surrender your sx licence.

Bummer.

But will I still be able to use SX3 using the original dongle on the original machine? That is, if I need to check something on the old G5/SX install, I just pull the Dongle out of the Intel/C5 machine, and slot it into the G5 - and SX will still work?

thanks again...

Your C5 license will allow you to run all Cubase releases back to Cubase SX 1, even the smaller ones like Cubase Essential, SE & SL.

Hey, Georg! I remember you from CubaseVST32 days!

One last question concerning this:

If I wish to link my G5/SX to a New Intel/C5.5 project using VST Bridge/System Link for multiple machine usage, do I need another Cubase Install/license , or just another dongle?

thanks!

kirk

Well, I've been around here for quite a while... Wink

For System Link you'll need two System Link capable Cubase versions running simultaneously. In fact, it even could be Cubase VST/32 and Cubase 5, but of course both have to be authorised by a dongle.

I didn't know VST32 could be authorized with a dongle...

Okay, sorry to be a pest, I'm still a little unclear... So, if I purchased another/new dongle, and placed one on each machine - would that accept my SX3 authorization? That way I could tie these two machines together as one running system.

Or do I need another completely new licence?

thank you once again...

kirk

P.S. It's good to see somebody I sorta know here (I even remember when the forums changed, and I became a "new member." Ack.)

All new dongles you can buy are empty, they don't hold any license and cannot authorize any software.
If you want to run SX 3 on the other machine you'll indeed need another dongle and a SX 3 license.

Sorry for not really remembering, but at least your username seems kind of familiar to me. Smile

Hi all,

I am a Cubase user since 15 years and all in all I am happy. But I ask myself, why there is no possibility to use one licence on two Steinberg Keys. I know, the old discussion again.

I'm using the NI Komplete packages (versions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) and some VST freewares, which are installed on 3 machines. This is permitted by NI. I own a studio PC for recordings and mixdowns, a laptop as backup and for recording vocals and another (cheap) laptop for recording new ideas. Unfortunately I have two households (due to my normal business work) and I don't like it to unplug and plug the Steinberg Key again and again.

Possibly the only recommendation will be to buy an additional Cubase licence, but I am using only one licence on one machine at a specific time, so I see no need for that.

Best regards

I have the exact same situation: 2 PCs, would like to run my older version of Cubase on the older PC with Cubase Studio 5 running on the newer PC. Steinberg really should provide a "2nd PC license" for this scenario.

I would love to have a second dongle so I can take my laptop out of town but here's no way I'd take my only dongle w/ me. Too risky.
I wish Steinberg had a "second licence discount" for existing users. East West has something like this for their sample library's that is perfectly reasonable and generates extra money for them. An extra $100 for a second licence for every library you own. Not bad. It's not like I'd use Cubase on two computers at the same time anyway - Just need it for my laptop when I'm out of the studio at a gig or out of town.
