when using software synths or instruments such as hypersonic, vb1,should the instruments be treated as "real" i.e. a guitar or bass patch compressed as is a real guitar/bass",sorry for silly question but im new to all this and trying to get some ground rules ta in advance

There can't be a general yes or no to your question.
one reason to compress a sound from a VSTi would be to bring it's higher notes more up front, since these tend to sound lower in level. E.g. lower notes might cut thru in the mix but hiher notes not.

Hi

It is a very relevant question, because many VSTi plugs have very much dynamics
in their sounds that are not useful in many of todays pop songs. Therefore it is hard to get the right
dynamics when recording the plug on a track. When you start to mix a lot of VSTi plugs that change
dynamics a lot it is much harder to find a balanced mix than if they are adapted to the style.

I have also found, that eg Hypersonic 1 sounds benefits on being pushed up into a more narrow
dynamic range. Gives them more punch in eg drums. Smile

I mostly use eg a limiter plug to limit the peaks from the VSTi plug and to make the overall sound louder.

One thing is to put the limiter on a subgroup to save cpu load. Wink
