|
|
Hi there,
I noticed there's a new midi-controller/keyboard to be released in januari, the 'Novation Remote SL25'.
It seems to meet my requirements, but I'm still left with some questions, so hopefully someone can help me out here.
Quote:
"39 of the 40 onboard Template Memories are factory preset (and also user programmable) so that the SL will work with all popular software applications, virtual instruments and external MIDI equipment straight out of the box. However, the remaining onboard Template is used for a new and special purpose, which is actually an infinitely expanding amount of Templates rolled into one. This cutting edge feature, we call Automap, is set to change the way music is made forever. When an Automap-supported application (currently Reason 3 and Cubase SX3, more to follow very soon) is booted up, the SL automatically loads this intelligent Template and maps all active components within the session to itself. Then, all the user needs to do is click once with the mouse or press one button to switch between controlling different instruments or sections of the session. Throughout the process, all information is displayed clearly on the screens to make everything crystal clear."
I inquired a bit about this controller and it appears it has 16 rotary knobs; 8 endless rotary encoders, and 8 pot's.
So this should mean that you can get parameter-feedback with the 8 endless rotary encoders.
but, AFAIK, the only way of getting the parameter-feedback in Cubase SX, is to create a Generic Remote Device.
Or you can offcourse load a device in native mode.
But, obviously, this controller is not on the 'native mode devices' list in Cubase SX3.
So, will an upgrade of Cubase SX3 be nessacary to get this controller as a native device in Cubase SX3 , or is there another way of doing this?
Any help/thoughts on this appreciated
Cheers,
James.
btw, this is a link of a large picture of the Novation Remote SL25:

I think you ought to address this question to Novation's technical support or customer service staff. _________________ Wheat Williams

Yeah, but I assumed Steinberg would have to take care of this(native mode), so I figured I'd be redirected to Steinberg anyway.
Anyway, I gave Novation a call and they said the neccesary files for the Native mode will be installed into the Cubase folder so Cubase SX3 will recognize it as a native device
cheers,
James. |

The Remote SL has a feature called 'automap' that is presently implimented with SX 3.x and Reason 3.x . Novation says automap for Logic is just around the corner.
If my understanding of how automap works is correct, as soon as you start Cubase, the SL immediately loads all of the software needed to run Cubase as a controller. You don't have to do a thing. All of the knobs, buttons, etc., are already mapped to Cubase functions. Furthermore, if you start an included effect or VSTi, the SL immediately switches to a controller for that device. If you are working in the mixer, SL controls the mixer.
Apparently, the same goes for Reason.
I am not a keyboard player, but am seriously looking at this as a controller for both programs (which I own). I already have a Mackie Control Universal, which I like. However, having a second controller that I could use to run Reason, or Cubase's FX or VSTi would increase my productivity greatly.
By the way, I believe Novation's Bass Station plug-in is included with the Remote SL. There's also editor software that lets you teach the SL to control any other software. Plus, it has many factory assigned templates, that work the same way as the original Novation Remote 25. _________________ AMD X2 4200 & P4

Yeah, the 'automap' function is definitly the feature that makes this controller very interesting.
I've been looking for an controller to control VST's and VSTi's, and also a new midi-keyboard, and I don't have a lot of space for it, so this should be the perfect controller for me.
But it seems to good to be true, so I wanna make sure there people out there that are using this controller succesfully.
Offcourse I can check it out myself as soon as it's released in Holland, but I'm just so damn impatient!
Cheers,
James. |

Not going to be playing any big piano parts on that
I actually find myself running out of keys on fast synth solos on my 3 octave Prophecy.
I can't imagine being limited to 2 octaves (even with a shift function)
But I guess it's horses for courses and all that. _________________ Me @ soundclick

Since I am a guitarist, I use an AXON AX100 to play MIDI synths. So a 2 octave controller isn't limiting to me. Also, I have a bedroom studio that limits the size and amount of gear I can have. So a smaller keyboard is actually a plus for me. (Addition by subtraction? I HATE that term!). Finally, as a non-keyboardist, I'd probably just play some chords on the SL for rhythm parts, so I don't need more than 2 octaves. And if a keyboardist does visit, at least we can jam.
Note: you can expect 49 and 61 key versions of the Remote SL to ship shortly after the 25 key version. Remember, the Remote SL is essentially the 2006 version of the 2004/5 released Remote 25, Remote49 and Remote61. Novation shipped the larger versions of the Remote 25 after the 2 octave model came out. So wait a bit and you'll be able to get a larger keyboard. _________________ AMD X2 4200 & P4
