It sounds pretty easy, actually. I'm out of town so I haven't had a chance to try it myself.
BTW ... can someone explain the part about the 3rd party plug-in? I'm not quite sure why a 3rd party plug in is necessary to move the bass sound from the right channel of the group or FX channel (the one with the gate inserted in it) to the center of the master channel. Is there no other way to get the bass signal from the right channel of the Group or FX channel to the center of the master channel?
To summarize:
1) Set up a Group or FX channel (stereo) with gate inserted.
2) Send kick (pan hard left) and bass (pan hard right) to that stereo channel.
3) Temporarily mute the bass send.
4) Adjust gate so it is opened by kick.
5) Unmute bass, now it pulses with kick.
6) Use MDA freeware "Image" (www.mda-vst.com) to get the signal from the right channel of the group or FX channel you set up to the middle of the master channel (details in the SOS article). BTW, this is the part that I can't figure out why it's needed.
7) Fine tune gate, blend signal with original bass for effect.
Hope this helps someone!
P.S. Has anyone tried the workaround described in the Cubase Info Base on these forums? _________________ Alexis

I don't do it that way.
I insert a compressor ( Voxengo Curnchessor ) that has selecteable sidechain channels into a quadro group and use channel 3 a the side chain tirgger channel. This means you can sdiechain compress stereo channels as well. |

Thanks, Paul. I did a search and got this http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=28660&highlight=voxengo for detailed instructions. Pretty much how you do it?
Also, I read somewhere that Voxengo is thought to add color to the sound more than some other VST compressors ... do you agree?
Thanks _________________ Alexis

The Crunchessor has selectable degrees of colour. |

I love SOS, but this method sounds way too complicated. Quattro Group is the way to go!.

Is it calibrated in Red-Green-Blue or Magenta-Cyan-Yellow _________________ Me @ soundclick

I did something similar that I read about in the Mixing Engineer's Handbook on my latest project.
I set up a group for the drums and bass then set up a nice compressor sound using Trackplug5 from Wavearts in an FX channel. Used a send from the drum & bass group to go there and blend it just slightly lower that the group track, like a db or 2. The trick is to set the release time on the compressor in time with the tempo. It really ties the bass and drums together well.
Peace,
