Guys, this is as good as it gets. We won't provide an even older Cubase SX version to address compatibility issues some of you are facing with SX 3. |
Eckhard,
The whole sentiment from Steinberg in offering this , is to allow those end users who have earlier .all sessions to successfully import them into C4.
There was a major shift in importing .all /.arr in SX3, as has been evidenced by many of us back in the day , and reared its head again recently for some of us. The solution for all , was to use N2/SX2 to successfully import the songs.
For those that have been with Steinberg for a while, and have the luxury of having an N2/SX2 install to fall back on, it is a non issue, for those that don't, the provided solution is of no benefit if the songs are not importing correctly.
Why is it that you find it acceptable to offer an SX3 version for that purpose, and not the earlier version which has far better importing facilities. If the exercise is to allow users to import the earlier .all sessions , then give the end users the facility to do it in the most convenient and reliable manner. SX3 simply does not work for many of us. SX2 does.

How in the world can those that have not been with Steinberg for a while have old .all files that they want to import in C4?
Guys, stay reasonable, please. This discussion is just on the edge of absurdity. |

Not everyone automatically upgrades to the next version, for those who jumped from Cubase VST to SX3 they are stuffed.
Bottom line is files from earlier Steinberg Apps should be compatible with current software using the same operating system .......we wouldn’t then be having this discussion |

The problem is maybe that Cubase VST isn't Cubendo, or Cubase isn't Cubase anymore. It's simply not the same code, the program doesn't open the same file, the order of almost anything is rearranged.
Cubase VST was like Cubase Atari with colors and audio files, a MIDI editor of which the life cycle HAD to end, IF the code for a modern day audio & MIDI editor program should be able to get optimized for what became Cubendo. The programmers didn't want to paint themselves into a corner, so the dumped the old crap and had a white sheet of paper, which is understandable.
To keep the Cubase name is good marketing strategics, at least initially but sometimes you might wonder if it wouldn't be better to let Cubase rest in peace and invent another "Nuendo Lite" with a new name because that's what Cubase SX is, everything but the name. The honeymoon comes to an end and eventually people will have to deal with Cubase that's not Cubase anymore.
So there are problems
Cakewalk used to be the program, now it's the program and Sonar is doing reasonably good in the market. So it's possible. I don't know but my guess is that not too many ask Cakewalk about making Sonar able to open old Cakewalk files? Is it possible by the way ... _________________ Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar |

About backwards compatibility ...
I just opened a project created in 4.0.x and tried to save it in 4.1.3 and ...
I get this now famous promt telling me I should think twice before saving the file in a newer version of the program ...
within the 4.x version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just silly _________________ Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar |

Potty Harry beat me to the punch , some end users do not automatically update to the next version..
Now seeing Mr Doll has backed you on the request being absurd.., I'll direct the following to both of you, so lets talk about absurdity..
I find it absurd that the whole exercise of offering the earlier V3 versions is on the sole premise of it being for those with earlier .all songs to have the facility to import them into C4, when V3 has proven to be useless for many of us. When I bring it to Steinbergs attention, the discussion is found to be absurd , whereas the provided solution , which is of no use for its intended purpose for many, is not..
Yeh, I agree that the discussion has now turned the corner to absurdity !!

Well, I have been using VST5 until 2007 (for financial reasons). Then I upgraded to Cubase 4. I have a lot of old .all files.
BTW I asked this some months ago and people told me I could download an SX3 version to import the old .all files. This option has been available (but not official) for some time. _________________ Kind regardz,

This kind of public attitude towards backward compatibility is sad to read and shows a lack of understanding of issues professionals face in the real world.
My personal strategy regarding Cubase backward compatibility is to never depend on it.
I often do soundtracks and jingles for radio, TV or trade shows. Clients expect to be able to call up and ask for changes to old projects.
"Remember that track we did for XYZ. Let's use that again. All I want to do is change the first and last lines of the voice-over. I can email the new voice-over right now."
The client expects that this will take almost no time, almost no work and expects to be billed very little and he expects the track to sound exactly the same except for the changes requested. He cares nothing about the march of time with new versions of software or hardware.
My personal experience with importing completed VST projects in SX is most often a crash, or it just hangs and never completes. In the few cases where it worked for me, the 'import' missed so much that it would take days of work to get a similar mix back again. (Such things as Dynamic Events are just ignored. I use them a lot. Remember that the regular automation in VST was almost impossible to edit.)
So, I still run VST when I need to open an old project. Luckily Micorsoft and Intel do seem to care about backward compatibility and VST still runs fine on my XP box, save one or two plugins whose vendors change the names of their updated plugins and disable the old ones - another 'damn the backward compatibility' strategy. (Autotune is the worst culprit here, but I usually bounced those tracks anyway.)
So my advice is, if you need access to an old Cubase project without planning to completely remix it, keep the Cubase version it was created in still running.
Happily for me, the last time a client wanted to revise a VST project was almost a year ago, but that is still no guarantee it won't happen again.
| Eckhard Doll wrote: | I tend to agree here. We won't and we can't upload a Cubase SX/SL 2 full installer. You had several years to either convert or even complete your songs...
If we provided a Cubase SX 2 I think we would also have a discussion about a Vista and OS X Leopard compatible Cubase VST update soon |

That kind of describtion is what I want, and more of it. Cause I've installed a few VST5 songs into SX3 (which I downloaded from the ftp-pages) and it has been ok (so far)), but to understand what happens, and maybe why, when I get into trouble it is good to have heard about other peoples experiences.

I have VST5 on my old comp and SX3 and C4 on my new comp, and linked together by a crossed network cable. Works ok, but waiting for trouble in this matter one day. Hopefully not tho.

Starting on page 746 in the SX3 PDF operation manual is a fairly detailed description of what the import does (and does not do) with vairous project data. |

But it is until now that a record company recognized the great song I wrote in 1994.
I am "lucky" that I am an early pro24 user and upgraded from Atari Cubase 1.0 'till C4.1 and have all the dongle's and other hardware still in store. Because when I wanted to load the old atari .arr file I had to go through VST5, SX3 to get to C4.1
This (again) proves that you cannot put a timespan on music. We, Steinberg customers, are into music NOT into computer software (by default). Don't try to change what we really want! _________________ Dedicated Win XP SP3 system for Cubase 5.5 & Wavelab 6.0.1:

Actually, and unfortunately, music industry in this day and age is becoming even more short-lived (or less durable) than software.
Luckily, there are exceptions to every rule ... |

Greets,
Does this solution work with Cubase Essential?
I tried both SX and SL but both does not recognize dongle...
Any solution?

Hi people,
Just downlowded the sx download to open some vst5 stuff to port across and ran into a serious issue. I hope no one else has but i just wanted to give the heads up just incase.
I followed the onscreen prompts as normal while installing the sx download, and took out my dongle etc when i was told (which i found strange, never had to do that before) . after install i put the dongle back in and my heart sank. no eliscences at all on my dongle. so i rebooted and still no luck. I was just about to lose the plot when i decided to uninstall all the syncrosoft stuff and sx to hopefully see my cubase liscence re appear. It did thankfully but now the sequel content has no liscense on cs4 startup and i have tried reinstalling it twice. when you click on the links for the syncrosoft stuff in the downloads section it takes you to mi4 page.... ????????. Maybe its my system that is bugged, but i had absolutely no issues till i installed the sx download. Anybody else had this or anything like it ?

Have you read this part of the announcement?
>>>
Cubase SX/ SL 3 can be run with your current Cubase 4 / Cubase Studio 4 license and allows you to import your VST projects, save them in the new *.cpr format and open them in Cubase 4 series. These are not officially supported under Windows Vista and OSX Leopard but should install and run just fine. Please be sure to install the current Syncrosoft License Control Center prior to starting Cubase SX / SL 3 for the first time. You can download the latest version here:
http://www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=920&L=1
<<<
Clicking on the Steinberg Key link takes me to the correct download page. _________________ Support Manager

Good day Mr. Helge Vogt,
First of all we thank Steinberg for the support, in the link for downloading the special editions of SX3 is missing
the link for the Cubase 4 essential.
Can you include this link or any other solution (SE3 perchaps ?)
Thanks again for your support.

I -think- I agree with Chroma.
Backward compatibility is, or -should- be HUGE. It -is- huge for me in my work and it -should- be mandatory. There has never been a major release of Cubase since I've been using it (VST5.0) that could be 100% relied upon to import from a prior version.
The only safe thing to do with any Cubase project you care about for the future is to use something like MEAP to create WAV files for each track.
What kills me is how little this seems to matter to most users.
After a lot of thought I've decided that, since backward compatibility will likely -never- be reliable, I don't care all that much about 'import' functions. Frankly, what I would like to see from SB is a reliable, easy to use, multi-track export function---as their competitors have.

Just one opinion, if you care: One possible workflow with Cubase includes generally exporting every finished arrangement, and mix solely in the audio domain.
Not only Cubase compatibility but also VSTi considerations are among several more reasons to work like that. |

Hello,
I am new in this forum and have a question concerning this thread.
Only Cubase 4 and Cubass Studio 4 owners get a link to the application with which to convert their old ".all"-songs.
I have only Cubase 4 Essential, and my Steinberg Key shows me that this license includes Cubase SE3.
Is it possible to get a download link to this program?
Yours kindly
BilboB. |
